[{"type":"txt","id":"rich_1581335796616","data":"Among all the days observed, there's also a World Read Aloud Day and on that day in this year, over 30 students volunteering with the Youngistaan Foundation celebrated it in a unique way, with a new initiative. They spent the day with 800 underprivileged children in various locations in the city and had a one-of-a-kind interactive session where they read a book aloud for these children. <\/p>Sounds interesting? Well it is, as it involved a lot more than just reading out from a book, as Ruthvika, one of the volunteers, explains, \"We wanted to do something that isn't just done in that day and instead, triggers something in these children. People aren't into reading usually and it is more so with children in government schools, owing to their socio-economic backgrounds and that is why we wanted to do this. We already have an initiative - Bright Spark, through which we undertake such events and as a part of that, we wanted to do an interactive learning\/activity based learning event and that's how it happened.\"<\/p>To kickstart this, they first had extensive training sessions for all the volunteers for a few weeks before the event, as these volunteers should also know what and how to read. In these sessions, a Neha Mathur, a professional story-teller, trained the students on the right intonation, the right diction and more.<\/p>After gearing up with the training, the 30 students then gathered 50-80 school children at each location and they held the session that aimed at expanding the child's imagination and vocabulary in addition to inculcating a habit of reading among the students. \"A primary goal of this was to make sure these kids learn how to communicate instead of rote learning. In our earlier sessions, when we wanted children to express something, we used to ask them to draw and use art as a medium as these children lack the skills to communicate effectively through speaking or writing. Through this event, we aimed at building effective communication skills in these children, which then will go a long way into their lives,\" shares Ruthvika, who is currently pursuing her Master's in Journalism.<\/p>Another interesting aspect is their choice of story that they read to the children. It's a children's book called Angry Akku, which talks about a little girl who is very angry. \"We chose this book because this book introduces the aspect of solving a problem systematically. Being able to approach a problem in the right manner to solve it is crucial and we wanted to hit multiple birds with one shot. Through this event, these students not only understood the joys of reading but also got to know life skills and how they can develop them,\" says Ruthvika.<\/p>They now want to make it a regular event and also train the English teachers at government schools to ensure the language and the necessary communication skills are taught to students in the right manner. <\/p><\/p>"}]
