Negotiations and agreements are a part of everyone's daily routine, but when it comes to negotiating salary at a job interview, students and even experienced professionals are apprehensive and nervous to crack the deal. There is a very thin line of difference between negotiation and argument, here is what can help you come out as a winner through the negotiation.

txt
rich_1490167605212

1. What is Negotiation?

To perform a job a better, you need to understand it well. Primarily in a negotiation; you do not choose out of many options but choose one and try to create a consensus there. Ultimately you need to create an irresistible deal for the other party that is conducive to you as well. It is all about how you can convince them that you are worth what you want as a package. Negotiation is both an art as well as science. Art because you need skills like be being bold and communicating well to the other party, which is to some extent innate. A science because this persuasion has to be done keeping in view a certain set of rules and guidelines.

2. Why is it important in a Job Interview?

First of all, when you negotiate, you have a better chance of getting paid what you need and want. You also get paid for your value, not just your time. Not negotiating your salary can lead to being underpaid. That is bad for your bank account, your health, and your job.

3. What kills your confidence?

Many students and even experienced professionals are nervous to negotiate because they are scared to lose the job. Even when you perform well in the interview, you hesitate to negotiate because of some inherent fears that bring down your confidence level.

It’s the feeling that you are not good enough as the others.

It’s the feeling that the other candidates may not negotiate so why would you?

Or it’s the feeling that, you may sound greedy when you negotiate for a higher salary so they might not want to hire you after all.

What one fails to realise is that when you channelise the discussion with the right approach, you will seem more confident and ambitious.

4. How can you crack a good deal?

First, you need to convince yourself that you are worth the job. For that, you need to learn everything about your field of work and quantify how your skills directly add value to the business you are considering to work for. For example, if it is Electrical Engineering, you know that you have your Electrical Engineering degree and you have effectively learned the fundamentals of how to perform your job as an Electrical Designer. Look back throughout your career or university projects to evaluate the work you did and the results you created. That is how you boost your confidence level.

Take help from industry experts and mentors so that you do not commit any mistakes. Do a little research about the company and the employer so that you can decide what to expect from the recruiters. Be prepared and controlled through the entire discussion and that would help you create a good impression.

College life a very important part of every individual’s life. We all are at a certain threshold after passing out from school. That’s when we have to take a very important decision. As per their project report, the team from Hyderabad Youth Assembly, had found out that the farming community in that village had no idea about new techniques of farming but they were extremely enthusiastic about them. And that, is the reason why they held this event where they spread awareness on concepts of kitchen gardening. "Of UN's sustainable goals this year, Zero Hunger is what we took up and we realised that most of the people here are either paddy farmers or are daily wage workers, with no idea of kitchen farming." explains Madhuchandra, a 2nd year BTech student from SNIST, who was a part of this group. "Having a kitchen garden is extra beneficial for them, as it is a very economic alternative towards buying vegetables, considering the fact that most of them are daily wage workers," he adds.

"We took help from the Department of Horticulture, who gave us a lot of info about kitchen gardening and also gave us packets of seeds to distribute amongst the villagers," he says. While explaining the benefits of having a kitchen garden, they also explained and created awareness of techniques such as roof-top farming. "We also explained how waste materials like plastic bottles to use them as pots. The Telangana government's commitment of providing the youth from backward and underprivileged the means to stand on their own two feet bore fruit on Monday when the first batch of students under Telangana Academy of Skill and Knowledge, in collaboration with ICICI Foundation, finished their 90 day training program and collected certificates in various disciplines, like Office administration, web designing and sales.

Following the signing of an MoU between TASK and ICICI Foundation in April of 2016, the government of Telangana, through TASK has mobilised over 600 young people from the state and trained them using modern day tools.

The students that were part of the program were trained by instructors, through role play and self study programs, while also teaching them about work place culture.

The TASK programme highlights the drive of the Telangana government to ensure the youth of backward and underprivileged areas of the state are empowered enough to stand on their own two legs, keeping in line of their promise to develop all of Telangana. To say this is an excellent initiative is an understatement, as empowered the youth of today only means a better future for their families and those who will come after them. Kudos to the Telangana government for the excellent programme and all the best to the youth who are about to join the workforce of this country due to TASK. Battle of bands held in colleges bring out some of the best student bands in the city (and sometimes even outside the city), and are a joy to witness, because they serve as a great example of the music scene of the city and a tribute to their inspirations. But, when a band is formed due to a battle of the bands event, you can be sure they know the capabilities of their peers before deciding to collaborate with them.

Fieto and Fables is one such band, one that was formed when the members met each other at a Battle of Bands competition. "It is funny really, in the beginning there was just me, Beno and Benny. What started as a competition turned into a jamming session because we were having incredible amounts of fun," says Fieto Rohith, who prefers to be known by his stage name, "the band slowly expanded from 3 people to 6, and that's where we are right now."

We speak with Rohith, the vocalist of the band about Fieto and Fables, their journey so far and the challenges they've faced.

"We have Vicky on the drums, Sam, the beatboxer, Benny the lead guitarist, he also plays rhythm from time to time, Rohit, another Rohit in the band, is the bassist, although he plays the keyboard and guitar too, and finally, Beno, who is super talented with everything, from bass, to drums, to guitars" says Fieto Rohith about his squad.

A student of Guru Nanak Pharmacy College, Rohith recounts bringing the band together and performing at gigs, "It is amazing really, from jamming together without knowing who we were, to forming a band today, it feels really amazing."

The members of the bands come from different colleges, "We have people from Shreyas, St. Mary's and St. Peters. It was music that brought us together" he smiles.

The conversation shifted gradually towards the future and the hardships they faced juggling their music and their studies, on which Rohith says, "It is not easy, getting together to just jam is difficult on most days, because of college timings, and various other factors like distance. Personally, I decided to take a break and simply stopped going to college so I can focus on my music. I might go back, or I might not, that remains to be seen, but obviously I can't ask band mates to drop their life and come running for this," he laughs, "It's not their fault, it is what it is."

Moving on to what he would like to tell students who want to pursue their own careers in music, he says, "Start young, that really is the best thing one can do. Start young, be dedicated to what you want to achieve, don't be afraid of failure because failure will be a part and parcel of the path you've chosen. This is about believing in yourself, believing that you can do it. So be brave and prepared to do things out of the box" he concludes.
