For the first time ever in Telangana, the state government issued an order on Wednesday, i.e. May 20, 2020, permitting the establishment of five private universities.

Amending the Telangana State Private Universities (Establishment and Regulation) Act, 2019, the government issued an ordinance “Telangana State Private Universities (Establishment and Regulation) (Amendment) Ordinance” and included Mahindra University, Mallareddy University and Anurag University, Woxsen University and SR University as Private universities.

After the Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan signed the order, it came into immediate effect and the government order pertaining to the same, would be published in the Telangana Gazette as Telangana Ordinance No. 1 of 2020.

The Telangana State Council of Higher Education (TSCHE) received 12 applications from various institutions to set up their universities in the state and from existing colleges to covert their institutions into private universities, following which, nine private institutions were given letters of intent by the state government, upon satisfying the necessary norms and fulfilling the necessary requirements. Out of these nine, the order was passed for five of them.

These universities can’t start their academic sessions from 2020-2021 as they need time to set up infrastructure and other facilities befitting a university.

Additionally, more private universities are likely to be permitted if they fulfil the necessary requirements.

txt
rich_1590045328540

Gone are those days when I was just happy with a chocobar and my teddy bear. Childhood summers were all about—late mornings (nothing changed here though), delicacies, naani-ghar (grandma’s place), putting up covers to the new books and bidding goodbye to the old ones, a break we wish was never ending but went in a blink of an eye. Everyone dreams, coz what is a life without a dream? Every summer was a dream to transform into a new version of myself, inculcate good habits, inspire from different people you come across and try to become “them” but as and when I went through this journey, I realized that unlike becoming someone else; it’s all about becoming a new “you.” It was the only time I used to retrospect, in those highly inflated MBA terms, do my very own SWOT analysis, where assumptions were unrealistic and the strategies barely sustained till the next summer and yet again a new SWOT is ready!

I dreamt of being a dancer, a teacher, a chef, a make-up artist (dreaming even today), a writer, a motivational speaker and what not, all influenced from the TV shows I watched, the stories I heard, I wanted to do every single thing that existed in this world. Meanwhile, in every 365 days, I changed, everyone does, as change is the only constant in life. I learn life lessons every-time I come across something new and the only thing I was taught and I firmly believe is no one in this world is inferior, there is always that every person on this earth can teach you, be it Bill gates or a street worker, every job is equal and every person is uniquely constructed with different experiences. Simply put, their experiences are my notes to add and may be vice versa, if you believe it too!

So, in these few sentences above itself, I see a change, rather a complete transformation in lives of people with technology, it unequivocally played a major role in bringing about this change in my life. Summers are a moment to cherish for the lifetime. It did change for me with every passing year with the new people I met and the constants who helped me grow.

It was a new revision of me as a person, my thoughts and expectations.
It changed from “Mom, please get me this” to “Mom, I will buy this for you soon.”
It changed from listening to grandma’s stories and understanding Dad’s real-life stories.
It changed from "Hi, how are you?” to “Hey, Wassup/Sup.”
It changed from complete trust to painful smiles.
It changed from we’ll all be the same to everyone changes.
It changed from unrealistic expectations to realistic targets.
It has changed from the simple “Hi, I am Prerna” to “tell me about yourself.”
It has changed from learning how to sell things to learning how to sell yourself in interviews.
It has changed from kitchen- kitchen to parties and now to lock down.
Ergo, now the only hope is to change for the better and keep the eyes of the mind open to never lose sight of the world, most importantly, never of yourself.

Not having to go to school, ranting about the summer heat and finding ways to sneak a peak outside only to be sent back into the home, competing for soaking our faces in the coolest breezes of the "cooler" even if it is for a second, the neighbour's call for the ritual of playing every evening, arguing with elders to go to play as soon as it hits 5pm only to be admonished by them about the wrath of the sun, having to bathe twice a day & lots of bruises and injuries and what not. Even endeavouring to recount these routines fills me with pure joy. The most underrated realization (at least in my case!) is how this time has been one of the centerpieces of my interpersonal development and bonding. I guess the above experiences are almost oblivious to many (if not most) of this gen-x kids and in that sense, I can see that there is much valuable stuff being missed out. I know you think I erred in the title. But did I? Well, let's try to figure it out together. Summers had always been fun, a break from the "hectic" school schedule and the teachers I hated seeing everyday. I used to miss my friends, but cousins took their place easily during the vacations. Every summer, we would go on a trip, generally 10-days. But those 10 days used to be an experience in itself. Even better than the trip was the flaunting, that I used to do to my cousins about how much fun I had and look at them getting envious. Now they used to tell about their trips too, but I just exaggerated better. But this isn't about those wonderful summer vacations. This is about the summer which was the opposite. Dad had met with an accident about 2 months ago. It was a severe one, and he had to be in complete bedrest till now. He only started going back to work some time ago. My summer vacations had started, needless to say, I was excited for my trip when mumma broke it to me that this time we won't be going on a trip because dad couldn't spare a single day off-work now. Being in 9th standard, I had matured enough to understand the conditions, but still, I couldn't stop my tears. I stopped crying later, but I decided this time I won't go to my granny's or grandma's as well, because all my cousins would have their trip stories ready while I would have nothing. My brother however, wanted to go so my dad and I stayed while mumma and bhai went. I started going to a nearby park daily. This one day, I saw a small kid sitting on the park boundary. He was too young to be sitting there alone, but I didn't see his parents around anywhere. I didn't say anything though, but just watched him. He appeared to be from a well-to-do family from his dress, but he had a gloomy face. He stayed for over an hour, continuously gazing the park grass, after which he left. Following my routine, I went next day too, with a chips packet. The kid was there too, same place in the boundary wall again, alone and just as sad as yesterday. I went and sat near him. I offered him the chips, he gestured no, bht didn't say anything. Thinking he was just being shy, I offered the chips again, with a little persuasion this time. This was the first time he spoke, well he shouted "I! DON'T! WANT! IT", and threw my packet away as he said. I got furious and saying "pagal hai kya be?", I left. What kind of a kid was he. Who even talks like that, and what's with that attitude. With all these thoughts in my mind I reached home. I told myself, I am never talking to him again. Next day, I found him in the park again, same place again. I wanted to say something, but I didn't. Today I sat on the opposite boundary wall. He looked more gloomy today, his face too, was red, did he do makeup? NO!, There were red marks on his hands as well. Someone had beaten him. I was still angry about the earlier day so I thought, with that attitude, it was bound to happen. But then tears rolled down his eyes, and that's when my anger flew away. I thought I have to talk to him, but how? He doesn't even talk properly. I still went. As I sat next to him, I placed my then shivering hand over his shoulder and said, "what happened little....." He hugged me tight and just broke down. What do I say? What do I do? I don't even see anyone looking for him. I hugged him back and kept asking him what happened, while he just cried on. "He beat me, He beats me everyday, he hates me". Such words from such a young kid broke my heart. I asked him, "who? Who beat you?" He didn't answer, but I had to know. I kept asking, and he finally said in his breaking voice, "papa". I couldn't believe it. He was being abused at home, and such a little kid. My guilt of things that I thought of him, filled me up, as I wiped his tears off, and then mine. We didn't talk again, but just sat next to each other, today I was gazing the park grass too. We sat together for an hour, before we left for our homes. I couldn't sleep that night. Here I was sad about missing a trip, and then there is this much younger kid, facing home abuse, but I also didn't want to tell anyone about it because that kid had to stay in the same place, surrounded by the same parents, who knows what his dad would do to him if he came to know he told someone about it. With all these thoughts, I saw the morning sun. From that day onwards, we started meeting daily. First he started talking, then smiling, and gradually he started laughing. It felt as if everyday he was coming back to life a little. I still remember the day when I bought chips again and he just saw me and took them, with smiling at me. That's when I knew, I did right. Then one day I met his mother, and I came to know that yuvraj had down syndrome, making even the most basic things difficult for him. His father wasn't a bad man too, he was just unable to understand his problem and thought yuvraj did everything intentionally just to irritate him. His behaviour completely changed once he found out his problem. In fact, he had started taking counseling lessons on how to take care of his kid. The mother also told me how he had found a friend in me and how it helped him to be able to do things that were otherwise difficult for him. Hearing her mother's words, I couldn't be more happier. The vacations got over, and yuvraj's family left and he took mid-year admission in a special school after I recommended his family to do so. But to date, I sometimes think wasn't it good that I didn't go on trip? Wasn't it good that I stayed? Was it really the worst summer vacation that I spent, or was it the best? I can't figure it out till date. As for the years after that, needless to say the trips and my bragging started again.

txt
While slaving away at the computer for my internship, the smell of the Mogra flowers bought for the Gods’ idols ushered in memories long forgotten. Memories of a happier and a more carefree time that is now distant, belonging to what feels like an eternity ago or perhaps even of another different lifetime. Distracted from my work and as I decided to take a breather, why not embark on this journey back to the past, I thought to myself. Maybe I would remember anecdotes that have been long buried in the grave wherein memories forgotten are tossed.

The treasured Summer breaks was perhaps the moment all kids would look forward to, after all what more would a child want than not studying and having fun all day. For me, it was when I’d go to visit my grandparents in Kolkata or they would come over to spend some jolly good time. I’d have study sessions with my paternal grandfather studying up poems and completing all the horrors of vacation homework. Morning walks with grandpa, being fed watermelons and mangoes by grandma, watching their TV shows and ending the day with rounds of Snake and Ladders and Ludo were the more common schedules. The occasional eating out or something fancy being cooked up at home added all the more flavour to the day, literally. Going out to play with friends with the setting Sun in the backdrop seemed to only be interrupted by the sporadic fights or calls to return home. That truly seemed to be a golden period for a child, and to remember all the toys and collectibles from all the chips packets which had become a part of our daily life.

However, the most defining part of my life then was that we would go to Kolkata and be able to spend time with both my maternal and paternal grandparents along with meeting up with the never-ending list of relatives and some other cousins. Eating all the mouth-watering preparations by my grandmothers that I’d rarely be able to have otherwise and all the varieties of sweets of all hues, colours and tastes in so many shapes and forms. Yet another part of those times that stand out is being able to truly appreciate the sounds of all the insects buzzing in the nearby fields in Kolkata while dozing away in the afternoon as well as the ice cream trolleys that passed by in evening in Pune.

But all of that soon changed as we shifted to Mumbai and as I started studying in higher grades. Days that were spent playing wholly and appreciating the buzzing of insects or the light breeze among the trees were replaced with whole days of vacation homework followed by drawing and swimming classes along with more hobby classes, as they were then called. Going out with parents for walks and spending time with them became diminished as they grew busier with work. Grandparents coming had become a rarity owing to their deteriorating health. With no more daily playing and no social media or mobiles, these childhood friends and I slowly drifted apart. Over time the open spaces in front of our house from where once I used to watch children play or appreciate the trees’ beauty, became buildings competing for height. Gradually it seems, that the shift from those playful times with no worry in the world was infected and polluted by all the stress of getting good grades, meeting deadlines of projects. A time that we could enjoy daily had become a time that we can only remember now.

As the clock bell rung, I came back to my senses, awake with a tear in the eye, it was already a good 2 hours since I had dozed off. What was that? Perhaps a dream, a memory, my memories? Well, with the dream and memories already fading away once more, I got back to my work.

txt
