'GST is now a reality.'

'GST is yet to be approved by state governments.'

If such headlines confuse you and you are wondering what is GST; here is all you need to know about the Goods And Service Tax.

GST is the biggest indirect Tax reform in India which would probably draw a lot of foreign direct investment, it is the most vital economic reform which would be conducive to a better tax administration in the economy. It is a centralised tax system which would replace many indirect taxes which vary from state to state which function through a white paper which is again subjective. The primary objective of GST is to create a single market rather than many as mentioned above.

In 2000 the BJP government along with state finance ministers came up with a GST module;

The then Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, during the central budget for 2006-07 introduced GST and stated that the Empowered Committee of State Finance Ministers shall work with the Central Government to introduce it in India. After certain modifications, a redesigned GST module was brought to the forefront in December 2008 and the details were given to the government.

txt
rich_1483438281527

The Goods and Service Tax was finally passed after a seven and half hour session with six official amendments approved by the Lok sabha with 443 members voting for it in may 2015. It was passed by the upper house on august 3 2016 with 203 votes in favour and zero against; the implementation of GST is delayed owing to demonetization policy as it is yet to be passed by state governments and enabling legislations are yet to be cleared.

txt
rich_1483443629960

1. For businesses and industries, if not for GST tax compliance would require attention to excise duty, customs duty, VAT, CST, octroi, etc; since all of the above are replaced with GST now life would become easier for them. It would also remove cascading effect which would eventually improve the competitiveness. As a result of changed tax rates exporters and manufacturers would be benefited the most.

txt
rich_1483439838910

2. For the central and state governments, the administration would be simplified, there would be an increase in revenue as there would be a control on leakages; it would reduce the scope of defaulters and also promote efficiency and economic growth.

txt
rich_1483440184546

3. For the general public or the consumers, a transparent tax system would reduce the tax burden. A single tax system is less cumbersome and easy to comply.

txt
rich_1483440453361

State VAT, Central Sales Tax, Purchase Tax, Luxury Tax Entry Tax (all forms), Entertainment Tax (not levied by local bodies), Taxes on advertisements, Taxes on lotteries, betting and gambling and State Surcharges would be replaced by GST.

When it comes to the Central taxes Excise Duty, Additional Duties of Excise (goods of special importance), Additional Duties of Excise (textiles and textile products), Additional Duties of Customs (commonly known as CVD), Special Additional Duty of Customs (SAD) and Service Tax Surcharges would be at different rates and instead of functioning independently would fall within the scope of GST.

txt
rich_1483440944110

After having learnt so much about GST our area of interest is, how the prices would change; so Cigarettes, Textile and branded jewellery, Beauty Parlor expenses for all the women; would become expensive. Banking and Insurance services, medicines, mobile phones would be inflated and eating outside at restaurants would also cost you a little extra. Do not worry GST can do some good too, cars, paint and cement, movies certainly, consumer durable items and electronics would be available for a lower price.
"}]

Students might have a certain animosity towards him, but Isaac Newton is truly one of the greatest minds to have walked the planet, from discovering gravity to making tremendous contributions to Calculus. While we'll never know how a lot of his work was lost to a freak fire in his study, we are sure there are a lot of engineering students today that are secretly thanking that random gust of wind or dog that caused the accident, who knows what else engineers had to study if all his work had survived. Our bet is on a random time traveler who didn't want students to suffer anymore.

Jokes aside, let's take a look at the less often mentioned facts about him on his birthday, on January 4th.

1. Isaac Newton was actually born on Christmas

Now we know that we said he was born on January 4th, but he was also born on Christmas. If you're confused, don't be, because a lot has happened between 1643 and today, one of them being the Church of England adapting the Gregorian calendar in 1752, one which we still use to this day. After the Church adopted the calendar, the corrected date of Newton's birthday landed on January 4th, which is why it is still the same today.

2. He predicted the end of the world

Newton believed he was chosen by God to interpret the Bible and in studying it, he concluded that the world would end no sooner than 2060, so don't worry, we still have time, although our children and grandchildren might have to suffer a bit, if it turns out to be true.

3. He was obsessed with the Philosopher's stone

Heads up Harry Potter fans, not only did Newton think that the stone was real, he conducted extensive research to verify the existence of the stone that would turn lead into gold, which also doubles as an elixir of life. Of course, this research was never published as it was considered 'unfit to publish' by peers.

4. He was a stutterer

Newton might be a legend today, but he was human after all. Newton suffered speech impediment that caused him to stutter, but of course, that never stopped him for achieving greatness. He was also a very reserved person, and when he was a member of the Parliament, he never spoke, except one time when he asked an aide to close a window on the premises.

5. The apple falling on his head story is bogus

By his own admission, the story of an apple falling on Newton's head is not actually true, perhaps it was told to make the story sound appealing, but Newton wrote about how he came about the discovery of gravity; he happened to watch apples fall from his window one fine day.

Who doesn't love video games? Icons like Mario and Lara Croft are globally recognized today, whereas games like Grand Theft Auto and Need for Speed Most Wanted have been played by nearly every student in this day and age, and there is at least one person you know that spends all their free time playing Counter Strike: Global Offensive or DoTA 2, sometimes both.

With video games becoming popular culture juggernauts, and studios being funded in the hundred millions to make one game, it is important to keep an eye on this industry, both for the sheer amount of fun it offers and for job opportunities in the future, because making video games may be hectic but it is a lot of fun.

Here are the top upcoming video games releasing this year!

1. Red Dead Redemption 2

Rockstar Games, famous for their insanely popular Grand Theft Auto franchise, released the first Red Dead Redemption game in 2010 and it went on to win numerous accolades and awards, with its fantastic story and amazing gameplay. Right now, the game is only slated for release on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with a PC release as of yet unannounced, but don't lose hope yet. 4. For Honor

Ubisoft knocked it out of the park with the trailer of a game that boasts about realistic melee combat in the medieval ages with three different factions who have three different play-styles, each requiring time to master. Players will play as members of each factions as they try to figure out what set off the 1000 year war they have all grown up listening about and then participating.
