Non-violence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind. It is mightier than the mightiest weapon of destruction devised by the ingenuity of man. - M.K. Gandhi.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi is the visionary who led India in its freedom struggle. The Gandhian movement led by Bapu had unconventional principles that revolutionized the struggle and gave Indians the path to achieve Independence. He inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world.

On January 30 1948, Nathuram Godse, a Hindu nationalist thought Gandhi was too accomidating and he assassinated him by firing three bullets into his chest.

Here is a look back at the legacy that he left. Ten things Mahatma Gandhi is synonymous for.

txt
rich_1485676219261

1. Quit India Movement:

It was a civil disobedience movement that began at All Indian Congress committee in Bombay. With the widespread dissatisfaction that prevailed over the rejection of the demands made by the Congress, Gandhi decided to launch the movement and his decision gained a lot of acceptance. On August 8, 1942 Mahatma Gandhi made a call karo ya maro ( Do or Die) in his very popular Quit India speech at Gowalia Tank Maiden, Bombay.

Quit India Movement marked the exit of British from India as it was the conclusive revolt against them. It was the most dynamic and forceful agitation with unprecedented arrests. 2. Non Co-operation Movement:

Infamous Acts like the Rowlatt Act and the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, outraged the Indians, which lead to many protests and agitations. After losing faith in the British government Gandhi declared that it would be a sin to cooperate with the satanic government. He used non-violence and peaceful resistance as his weapons in the struggle against the British Raj. He had a massive following among both Hindus and Muslims that helped him rally hundreds of thousands of common citizens towards the cause of Indian independence. For the first time in Indian freedom struggle Gandhi gained such support. 3. Khilafat Movement:

To increase the spectrum of his political base, Gandhi decided to appeal to Muslims that would strengthen his position in Congress. He then became their spokesperson in the Khilafat movement, a worldwide protest by Muslims against the collapsing status of the Caliph, the leader of their religion. As a mark of solidarity with Indian Muslims he returned the medals that had been bestowed on him by the British government for his work in the Boer and Zulu Wars. This made Gandhi a national leader with a huge following from diversified cultures and it also established a powerful and influential position for him in the Congress.

4. Salt Satyagraha:

Initiated by M.K. Gandhi, Salt march better known as Dandi March is an act of nonviolent civil disobedience. The 24-day march began on 12 March 1930 as a direct action campaign of tax resistance and nonviolent protest against the British salt monopoly, and it gained worldwide attention which gave impetus to the Indian independence movement. After the Non Co-operation Movement Dandi march brought together large number of Indians and this had a great impact in British and also World attitudes towards the sovereignty and self-rule of the nation.

5. Civil Rights Activist in South Africa:

Gandhi lived in South Africa for about 21 years, where he developed his political views, ethics and political leadership skills. Gandhi faced the discrimination directed at all people of colour. He was thrown off a train at Pietermaritzburg after refusing to move from the first-class. The magistrate of a Durban court ordered Gandhi to remove his turban, which he refused to do. Indians were not allowed to walk on public footpaths. Gandhi was kicked by a police officer out of the footpath onto the street without warning. These incidents have a had huge impact on Gandhi's life, it is then that he started questioning prejudices, racism and social injustice. He unified a political force and formed the Natal Indian Congress. He was the voice of Indian community there and his ideologies took proper shape through the struggle.

6. Champaran and Kheda:

One of the initial achievements of Gandhi was with Champaran and Kheda agitations of Bihar and Gujarat in 1918, the peasantry was forced to grow indigo, a cash crop whose declining demand fetched no money to these farmers and not just that they were forced to sell this to the government at a fixed price. To oppose this they began these agitations. Again in the same year when Kheda was hit by floods, Gandhi initiated a signature campaign where peasants pledged non-payment of revenue even under the threat of confiscation of land. A social boycott of mamlatdars and talatdars accompanied the agitation. He worked hard to win public support for the agitation across the country. He was successful in both of his endeavors where he used nonviolence as a weapon.

Gandhi credits Shrimad Rajchandra for showing him the path of ahimsa. He explains about this philosophy that he religiously followed through out his life in his book 'My Experiments with Truth'. He said practicing non-violence required immense courage and faith. He made India fight the British rule without arms and weapons. It is particularly associated with his contributions to the idea of nonviolent resistance, sometimes also called civil resistance. The two pillars of Gandhism are truth and non-violence. But Gandhi never introduced the term Gandhism to the nation, he said "There is no such thing as "Gandhism" and I do not want to leave any sect after me. I do not claim to have originated any new principle or doctrine. I have simply tried in my own way to apply the eternal truths to our daily life and problems...The opinions I have formed and the conclusions I have arrived at are not final. 9. Gandhian Economics:

'Gandhian economics' is coined by one of the supporters of Gandhi, J. C. Kumarappa. It is a economic thought that is based on spiritual and socio-economic principles that he practiced and preached. It is certainly contrary to the concept of economics which drives all business activities to maximization of profit. Gandhi felt that this was both unsustainable and devastating to the human spirit. His theories contained elements of protectionism, nationalism, adherence to the principles and objectives of nonviolence and a rejection of class war that were in favor of socio-economic harmony. Gandhian economics has underlying principles, Satya (truth)
Ahimsa (non-violence)
Aparigraha (non-possession).

The Partition of India was the 1947 partitioning of the British Indian Empire into India and Pakistan. It led to the creation of the sovereign states of the Dominion of Pakistan and the Union of India, and Gandhi as a rule was against the partition as it contradicted his vision of religious unity. He made strong efforts to unite the Indian Hindus, Muslims, and Christians. Over the past few years, Hyderabad has seen a lot of independent film-makers and short-film makers but what sets Anshul Sinha, 27, apart is his choice of themes. Having made over 40 films with social themes; his last film A Gateway To Heaven, shows the bone-chillingly scary reality in mortuaries and a man who fights it; throwing light on the organ mafia that has been supplying dead bodies to various institutes across the country.

With over 100 National and International awards to his credit, Anshul has now set out on the task of making another hard hitting film - Mitti- on the ongoing agrarian crisis on the country. In other words, a film on why the number of farmers committing suicide is so high in our country.

"I got in touch with Dr Rajeshwara Rao, earlier, who had performed the final rites of more than 12,000 orphan dead bodies in the past few years. It was then that the documentary Gateway to Heaven was born," says Anshul, who recently quit his job to pursue Mitti.

Having received great accolades for A Gateway To Heaven, Anshul was then noticed by G V Ramanjaneyulu, a well known agricultural scientist. "Ramanjaneyulu sir told me to make a film on this in 2015 and we started researching for it right then. I even learnt farming before I even thought of making a film on this," explains Anshul, who then went about compiling all the necessary data to make this film.

After finalising the script, Anshul painstakingly made sketches of all the 1000 frames that are to be a part of this film, "I want every aspect of this film to be perfect and that is the reason we made on-location sketches of every single one of the 1000 frames that comprise this film," he says.

After having done extensive pre-production work and after having finalised the cast - who are experienced theatre artists from the city, he is now struggling to get funds.

"I have been to 22 producers across the country. For reasons I don't know, most of them are refusing to even talk. We were told to leave at the reception itself, at many producers' offices," he laments.

He now intends to crowdfund the film.

We believe our country needs more film-makers like Anshul, who have the power to drive a change in the country, with their impactful themes. If you wish to support his endeavour, you can support here.
"}]

Priya was travelling in her college bus, peeping through the window for some interesting stuff just like she does every day and she found something that touched her soul...she noticed a lady who was in a worst state she could ever imagine; with torn and blood stained clothes, visible bruises, bites on her neck and cuts on her lips. It was not hard for her to understand that the lady was brutally harassed by someone.

She couldn't stop her tears, staring at her. She got down the bus and rushed towards her, gave her sweater to the lady but she was afraid to accept it. Her eyes were buried with tears and thoughts with fear. Priya some how managed to give the lady her sweater. Looking at her closely, Priya understood that she was going through some trauma and she walked towards her bus. She went to the college like nothing happened but her soul was questioning her throughout the day, Who was she? Why was she like that?

The next day when she was going to college she found the same lady crying , this time she couldn't stop herself, she went to the lady and asked who was she and why was she crying. Then the lady narrated her story that she was a girl from Mumbai who came there to make her living. She was betrayed by a boy and he used her for his sexual needs.

Priya took the lady to a police station nearby and soon the boy was caught and punished . She admitted the lady in a hospital. Though she couldn't recover mentally she grew healthy enough. She sent the lady to her parents at Mumbai. Though the lady's story had the best possible end there was one question which Priya couldn't answer. That is "why should she suffer for someone's crime?," and the society answered "she is a GIRL".
"}]

It is generally said that if you want to impress an Indian then speak English and you will perceived as an intelligent man. Does speaking a particular language other than mother tongue add charm to your personality? If the language is English, it certainly does up to some extent in the Indian domain. Right now English has become so rooted in India that if you can’t speak or understand English fairly, your
chances of getting succeeded are quite less.

The credit goes to British rule in India, English came to India with colonisation, after the establishment of their rule, they started teaching English language through Christian missionaries. This was the very first effort on their part to make it a second language of India after Hindi. Hindi is spoken by 40% population of India and English being the second language is spoken by 12.10% people as per the census 2001. The current percentage will be much higher.

What makes English important in India:

Indian education system is such that from the very first class you have to learn English. Whether you like it or not that does not matter, If want a job then you gotta know English. For every competitive exam, be it for the corporate sector or government sector you need to know the language well. What makes Indian education system inefficient and ineffective is the undue importance given to English. All the official work is exercised in English and all the court hearing are held in English only.

What do I personally think about English in India:

As protester of English I think that it is an attack on the Indian culture and our native languages are under threat. But fortunately native languages are always put above any other language. So it’s not a threat to other languages. When you speak a foreign language it certainly gives some idea about your
intelligence. It will certainly enhance your brain power.

Efforts have always been made to impose Hindi on all the people, that can’t be the case in a diverse country like India. People have their own choices in a democratic country. They are free to speak the language of their choice. If I feel like to speak the English language then its no one’s business to ask me to give preference to any other language. You have your own choices. Apart from making you analytically strong the English language has many other benefits too. It is an international language. If you know English well then you would be able to communicate to the world and you would get to know the recent international happenings.

If you know English well then you will have access to all the greatest book of all time because most of them are in English.
So speaking a foreign language has its own charm but the proper respect should be given to the native languages. We can’t ignore them.
If Hindi is our mother then English can be treated as Wife and we can love both simultaneously.— Chetan Bhagat
"}]

About The Event:

Over the past few years, India has seen unprecedented growth in the Life Sciences sector both as a producer of medicinal products and more recently as one of the world’s most prominent market for healthcare products and services. The growth in the sector has been driven by significant investments and initiatives by both the public and the private sector. Given the multifaceted advantages across the Life Sciences value chain (R&D, Manufacturing, and Commercial) supported by emerging regulatory environment, India has finally emerged. Now is the time for both local and global stakeholders to act together and leverage the power of India to provide access to quality healthcare products to billions of people around the world. With this context, the fourteenth edition of BioAsia will discuss the foundation and initiatives required to achieve this glorious future.
"}]
