Nikhilesh has perpetually been curious since his teenage. At an early age of 13, he was in a search of using waste like human hair, bird’s feather, sawdust to clean oil from water. With a strong enthusiasm for science, he was excited to find an inclusive solution to oil contamination in water, after visiting a demonstration on pollution. He used his creative mind to comprehend out the potential remedy instead of just following the internet. He had confidence in his own ability that prompted him to recollect how, through his childhood days, his mother would oil his hair. He recognised that human hair has potential of departing oil from water. Then began his research. He assembled a beaker from his school lab and some waste hair from a salon.

He blended motor oil and lubricant with water and saw a layer of oil form on the surface of the water. He then used the hair to absorb oil from water. He discovered that 90 percent of the oil got absorbed within 30 seconds. Another thought came to Nikhilesh’s mind after he saw a documentary on wandering birds that died because of the spillage of oil in water. Bird’s feather can soak oil. He reminisced of reading somewhere that oil gets stuck to bird’s feathers whilst they reach the water surface to catch fish. The oil stuck to their feathers heads to their death. This made him conclude the second ingredient — bird’s feather.

The third product was sawdust which he discovered when he saw a carpenter using it to soak the oil from the ground. With these three elements, Nikhilesh made a model with waste ingredients. The model has won him many accolades including being shortlisted by National Innovation Foundation. He also is the recipient of an award from President Pratibha Patil in 2009. He won an INK fellowship in 2011. He wants to pursue greater things with science. Presently he is pursuing his undergraduate degree in physics from Guwahati, Assam.

I want to clarify before itself that I don't intend to hurt anyone's sentiments, neither speak anything against any culture. I just want to put forward a question. Why Honour Killing? Second-by-second, our country goes on progressing and peaking new heights of development but most of the people still follow that backward mentality. Many still believe in casteism. I always respect my country's various cultures and have faith in them. But I suppose no culture teaches to kill love. The most common reason for honour killing is disapproval of love. Thousands of young talented individuals of our country have been hanged to death for just one reason- love.

Love is an involuntary emotion. It can happen to anyone and there's nothing wrong in that. If a person can fall in love with someone without seeing his/her caste or religion, then, why can't the families also accept it. The tradition of honour killing has been prevalent in the society from long ago. Every year, a large number of people suffer this atrocity but many such incidents are not even reported. I never witnessed an honour killing neither did I ever fall in love, yet I find nothing wrong in love. Probably, I suppose the lovers should try to convince their families first rather than eloping. Probably, love shouldn't be taken seriously. But I don't think that either the society or the families have the right to separate two individuals deeply in love.

The Northern states of the country are the most-affected ones. States like Haryana and Punjab are the most notorious. Cases of honour killing continue to come out of these regions. Absence of a strong law against honour killing doesn't help either. Honour killing comes under ordinary murder cases. More often than not, no action is taken against the convicts due to lack of evidence.More often than not, the convicts use their political connections to save themselves and justice is not provided. But one exceptional case is the Manoj-Babli honour killing case in which the convicts were given death penalty while the head of the khap panchayat which ordered their killing was given life sentence. But evil acts like this still continue in the society and what hurts the most is that most of the people either support honour killing or they keep their mouth shut. Many people have their own dilemma whether to raise their voice or not.
People need to realise that they don't have the right to kill anyone whatever the reason maybe. Justice should always be done by the law. Also, the government needs to take honour killing as a serious issue and enforce strict laws to prevent such evils from prevailing. Love, in any form, is not a crime and if anyone doesn't agree with this, then, he/she should not give love to his/her children. There is much more to life than just a few mistakes and if the citizens of this country don't realise this, then, this nation shall never develop.
The song Ghar Yaad Aata Hai Mujhe clearly explains the pain from honour killing. Hope you let your tears flow while listening to this song, so that, the tears form a river of pain which washes away the evil of honour killing.
"}]

Lokmanya tilak promoted public celebrations of Ganesh Chaturthi by installing a Ganesh idol within the local communities to bridge the gap between the 'brahmins' and 'non-brahmins' as everyone is engaged in the celebrations irrespective of the 'caste'.

Back then India was a British colony and Indians were not allowed to form groups or organise public meetings as British officials were afraid that we may plan of rebelism.

So Ganesh Chaturthi celebration was a platform where people can meet. This practice soon became a public event where elder people used to discuss political issues and current affairs of India then.

Also people of different tribes performing various cultural activities soon after the evening puja and aarti.

Activities such as folk music, dance, drama, poetry, etc were enjoyed by the public.

This can be seen even today in modern India. No matter how big the 'Idol' is but we must never forget the actual significance of celebrations is to get people together.
"}]
Ganesh Chaturthi, the festival of bright beginnings and right doings has paced into the calendar. People worship the lord with immense devotion for the sake of righteousness and the strength to tackle obstacles. This festival falls in the second half of the calendar and people celebrate it with pomp and harmony. The irony that now takes form amidst the pile of devotion is nothing but, 'Is this indeed devotion?'.

This festival has slowly rooted itself into a business sidelining the mainstream of devotion. Days ahead of the actual festival, the road sides are crowded with the Ganesha idols of varying sizes and lucrative colours. Sellers compete with each other and prepare the idols with attractive materials like the Plaster Of Paris (POP). Those made out of nature alliances like Clay and Hay are ignored taking into consideration the attractiveness POP adds into the idols. Apart this, the height of the idol is a major criteria amidst people. They compete and construct massive idols of about a 100 feet or more. Massive heights in the idols are taken to display their strength and monetary power. Now the question that paves its way into the discussion is, 'Are these really needed?'

Four to five idols installed in a small street of not more than a hundred people isn't a rare sight these days. The regular harmonious songs with devotional aura are rarely heard. The sense of the actual essence of the festival is slowly diminishing. 'Are these many idols in a single street really necessary?'.

Idols are also designed in various forms like those of modern day cricketers, Politicians, Filmy get-ups further adding to the disrespect towards our culture.

Lately speaking about the nimanjanam ceremony. These massive idols are taken to the near by water localities with dances and fun. These idols tend to throttle or disrupt the power cables in the way and interfere with the traffic. It is a huge task to immerse these idols into the water and most times are accompanied by cases of drowning and stampede.

This ridiculous behaviour by the mankind is now a serious threat to the nature. The extreme quality in the paints used on the idols put the life of marine animals into grave risk. Every year thousands of sea creatures are reportedly perishing due to the harmful POP and ultra colours coated on the idol. This unchecked, disrupts the living cycle in a long term.

Steps should be taken to celebrate the most auspicious festival of the hindu calendar in a eco-friendly manner. The usage of POP should be replaced by eco friendly materials like Clay, mud and hay. Colours can be avoided. People should concentrate more on the devotion than on the appearance of the idol. Government should take proper action to restrict the number of idols installed. It should insist on clay idols and distribute them if necessary. Its time to question our conscience. Have an ecofriendly festival. Happy Ganesh Chaturthi.

Lord Ganesha speaks,

"Oh dear theist,

It is not the height of my idol

that adds a bliss to me!

It is the heights in the devotion you show,

that adds a bliss.

Those colours you quote,

ain't visible to me.

The love you shower is what

that touches me.

Don't make me a blame

for all the tiny fishes that perish.

If its me who has created you

then its me who has created them.

Oh theist,

a little love is suffice,

a little love is suffice."
