[{"type":"txt","id":"rich_1528817474780","data":" In recent years, Indian Badminton players have made a mark in the international arena. It is one of the most popular sports in India, and is managed by the Badminton Association of India. Badminton gets its name from Badminton House in Gloucestershire, England - the home of the Duke of Beaufort, where the sport was played in the last century. But the sport gained popularity only after 1992, when it made a debut in the Olympics in Barcelona. Since then, it has been a roller coaster ride for the sport and many major Badminton tournaments are played all over the world today.<\/p> <\/p>In Indian Badminton, two names were synonymous with the sport in earlier times- Prakash Padukone and Pullela Gopichand. Prakash Padukone was the first Indian badminton player to win the All England Championship, in 1980. He was also the first player who won the bronze medal in the World championships,  in 1983. Pullela Gopichand set records when he won the All England Badminton Championships in 2001. He turned to coaching soon after and established the Gopichand Badminton Academy at Hyderabad which has produced some world class international players such as Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu and Srikanth Kidambi, just to name a few.<\/p> <\/p>Saina Nehwal first came into the limelight when she won the Gold Medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune in 2008. Soon after, she reached the quarterfinals of the Beijing Olympics. She went on to win Bronze at the London Olympics and became the first Badminton Player to win a medal at the Olympics. She was also ranked first in the world in 2015, which was a huge feat itself. Then came another young shuttler called PV Sindhu, Sindhu won the bronze medal at the World Championships in Guangzhou in 2013. At the Rio Olympics in 2016,Sindhu became the youngest and first woman to bag an Olympic Silver medal representing India. The men have also not lagged behind and players like Srikanth  Kidambi have won laurels for the country. In the doubles circuit, Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa have been doing really well. In a country like India where cricket is given so much importance, exposure should always be given to other sports as well. There is no dearth of talent in a huge country like India.
