A lot of music reminds me of the past.finding that words set to music are the easiest to remember.

Music on my younger years, when I was still on Elementary. Its quite good listening to the songs of the past. It reminds me of my childhood days.

"Music has the power to express your emotions when words are not enough".

It has been proven that music is the only thing that can activate all parts of the brain.

Not just separately either, multiple sections firing off at once. Which is why when listening to a song it can remind you of where you were eating the last time you heard it, what you were eating, who you were with, the conversation, memories related to It.

Music also has the ability to evoke emotions through the lyric or the chord changes and you'll apply those to moments of your life. So when it comes around and you hear that lyric that you held on to during an incredible moment of your life, you'll find yourself releasing the same emotions in your body.

txt
rich_1509019047571

I've lost count of the number of times I looked at my motorcycle and thought to myself, let's just kick start it and drive off into the sunset and probably never return, keep wandering till the end of time, until the sun burns out and the stars die. But, sadly for us mortal beings, we are confined to our place in the world due to various factors, we often tell ourselves that we will travel one day and never actually do it, we rationalise it by telling ourselves that we simply cannot afford the journey.

Vimal Geethanandan was, however, different. He spoke at length about reaching out and grabbing what was meant for him, travelling and living his dream, as he told me over the phone from Bangalore, so he decided that it was the time he simply practices what he preached and set an example.

"That's how I began my journey," he laughs over the phone, "I just had to show that yes, I'm serious about what I'm talking about. As simple as that."

By the time Vimal was done with his journey, he had travelled thousands of kilometres across 11 states over a course of 9 months, only cutting short his journey to return home because his family was shifting base from Anantapur to Bangalore. He did this without spending a single rupee.

"All I had was three pairs of clothes, a tent, a sleeping bag, my laptop, phone and phone charger. That's all", he says over the phone, "The journey itself was accomplished by walking, hitchhiking, depending on the kindness of strangers and my own volunteering."

And kindness, Vimal found in droves. He speaks about meeting people who went out of their way to help him, a family that hosted him for over a week, people he met through his volunteer work, with whom he also travelled to the North-Eastern states.

He travelled through Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Goa, Maharashtra, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland and West Bengal, beginning his journey in July 2016 and ending it in March, earlier this year.

"My mother only let me go when I promised that I'll take my phone with me and stay regularly in touch, otherwise I wouldn't have done that either," he laughs, "So over the course of the journey, I had to constantly keep talking to her, telling her where I was. I turned this into telling her my experiences."

The 23-year old dropped out of Engineering only recently, "I was at college to learn about life in general, I don't think I need a degree to do what I want to do in life. I learned what I had to learn, so I left," he says, "You really learn a limited number of things in college. Life is the real teacher."

As our interview drew to a close, we ask Vimal whether he would have continued his journey had he not returned to help his family move to Bangalore, to which he replied in the affirmative, "I was fully intending to keep travelling till I travelled all the states in the country. I wouldn't have returned so soon."

Asking my final question, I ask him what has he learned over the course of his travels, "Everyone has a story, everyone is just trying to survive, live, go on to tell their own stories one day. This is, I feel, extremely important, as my travels have shown me that I cannot really judge anyone. I've stayed on the roads, I've felt lonely, I've cried when I was lonely, I've missed friends and family, but at the same time, I met incredible people who took me in, people who made me part of their stories. I've lived in everything from star hotels to huts and I've listened to all their stories. It has taught me to be humble and be accepting, we are an incredibly diverse and amazing country. I hope I can get this message across to everyone."

As he signs off with his final message, a thought crosses my mind, a wild fantasy of running off again into the sunset, but I tell myself that my place is telling the story for now, and in that, my own will be written. One day, I shall pack my bags and look to the North because the Mountains are calling their son home.
"}]
Times are changing and print is a dying medium’ is something we often hear nowadays, even from journalists who’ve kickstarted their career with print journalism. If one were to understand the reasons behind this phenomenon, one could draw a similarity with why Clark Kent quits the Daily Planet in the movie ‘Man of Steel’. His resignation reflects the present-day challenges that print journalism is battling with - the balance of journalism Vs. entertainment, the role of new media and the role of a citizen journalist.

In India, it’s not all that bad with print. While we do have a considerable number of educated/literate people preferring online news, a significant population in our country still reads the newspapers and sometimes, even waits for it to be delivered at their doorstep.

txt
rich_1509015610942

Print journalism is the one of the largest employers of journalists in the media & entertainment industry. It offers a plethora of opportunities for those interested in pursuing ethical journalism and in-depth reportage. This includes magazine as well as newspaper publishing. Every person who wishes to make a career in journalism needs to remember that “deadlines are sacrosanct.”

Newspapers are an excellent ground for training in print journalism as you get to dabble several small roles in the news organisation, while you also mould yourself to meet everyday challenges. This is also the time where you spend time deciding whether to focus on reporting, writing, editing, designing/sketching or photojournalism.

For novices, starting off as a trainee sub-editor on the moffusil (district) desk is a great way to start your career. It teaches you how to repair language, find ‘news’ in the report and strengthen the story that’s print-worthy. It also gives you a great deal of satisfaction when you see that story in print and gradually, gives you a command over concise and accurate reporting/writing.

txt
rich_1509015644335

On the other hand, working at a news magazine is quite different from working at a newspaper. There is not all that much room in the publication for the actual stories – the magazine comes out just once a week and a lot of space is taken up by advertising; many of the articles have to be very brief. This intensifies competition among the writers. The atmosphere is also different in that it’s a lot more corporate than at most newspapers.

Magazines offer the opportunity for beginning journalists to both hone their skills and develop expertise in a specific content area. However, there’s not much room for rapid advancement. People seeking a career in the magazine industry usually have a broad liberal arts background, writing skills, as well as a specific major or field of interest. New career seekers should intensely research their publications of interest, understand the target audience and be able to offer creative ideas and suggestions which are vital to a magazine’s success.

Before you choose your career in journalism, remember that ‘News never sleeps’.

txt
rich_1509015681115

"The Indie scene in India is dead", claimed a learned philosopher of all things on a particularly cloudy evening at The Gallery Cafe which was hosting an open mic session that went on to host some of the finest talents from Hyderabad I've had the pleasure to witness.

"There is no originality left anymore," he continued, before finishing earnestly and sipping coffee that can only be described as Pretentious Grande, "At least the rock and metal scene is still pretty tight, otherwise all these soft Indie rock and pop-rock songs, there's no future for that." And for a while, I believed him.

That is, until I heard about Tejas.

Starting in 2011 and having multiple live shows to his name, 28-year old Tejas from Mumbai - although saying he is from Mumbai would be a disservice to the sheer force of will and amount of dedication he has to stay on the road performing across the country - brought about a pop-rock force to be reckoned with in the thriving Indian Indie music scene, a scene which he had discovered after moving here for his studies from Dubai.

With a show lined up at Tabula Rasa Bar in Hyderabad on the 27th of October, we spoke to Tejas over the phone about his music, the journey so far, lessons from live gigs and more.

"I've always been interested in music," says Tejas, responding to my question on what started his journey as an artist and a performer, "I started learning pretty young and in school. My parents used to move around a lot and I ended up growing up in Dubai until I was 18, which is when I had to return to India. So here I was, back in the country, about to join a college and music as a hobby I was really interested in."

Tejas goes on to talk about how it was never his intention to become a professional performer, "Can one really plan this sort of thing, or is it more of going along with the flow?" he laughs, "When I came to India, it was quickly apparent that there was a thriving indie music scene here, and this was the type of music I really liked. Eventually, I started performing various gigs around the college but I'd never actually intended this to be a career. It just happened."

Tejas established his group in 2011 while continuing to carry on with this life, getting his Masters degree and working. He would go on to work as a host on a radio station as well as in advertising, "You saw these incredibly creative people come together and just, be creative and you say to yourself that you want to do that too! My time in advertising has introduced me to some incredible, invaluable people."

Managing the work-life balance when every person who has seen you perform live is talking about you is difficult, as Tejas confirms, "It was getting incredibly difficult for me to keep my job while still performing and still being on the road. So I quit my job in 2015", he says, a hint of a smile in his voice, "Ever since then it has been one gig after another to perform, one story after another to tell."

Talking about his work and the latest album, titled 'Make It Happen', Tejas says, "These are deeply personal works, and I'm an incredibly slow songwriter, it usually takes me a year to put everything together," he laughs, before responding to a question about the thought process behind writing songs, "To be honest, it is more of letting thoughts flow as they come and seeing what works and what doesn't. I know it sounds tedious, but that is why it takes me so long to put everything together!"

"It's more of a letting your mind wander and gather your thoughts thing, like don't dwell too much on what does not work, just keep pushing forward till you find what you need," he continues, "This has led to the creation of some really diverse tracks."

Tejas draws inspiration from some of the finest pop-rock musicians over the last few decades, as well as pop-culture and comic books. Speaking of the sound of Tejas and where it is derived from, he says, "I had a certain type of music I listened to while growing up and I wanted to recreate that and present it to the world to the best of my abilities. I daresay I've more or less done so."

Pop-Rock has been around since the 1950s, originating in a time when Rock music was just beginning to make a mark on the music scene around the world with its hard and heavy tone. Pop-rock adheres to the similar styles of rock music, but instead of going heavy on the snares and the guitar shredding that would eventually evolve into Hard Rock and Metal, Pop-rock focused on using the same principles to produce a softer, gentler style of music, one that would eventually go on to appeal to even the most hardened metalhead - and inspire Tejas to establish his group - years later.

As our interview draws to a close, I ask Tejas what his advice to students today would be, especially students who are jamming out of rented jam rooms and their rooftop houses in hopes of making it big one day, "One has to understand that one has to find their own voice to tell a story. I mean, sure, there are artists who have written songs about a particular issue and poured their heart and soul into singing and performing it, but that is their voice, and someone walking this road has to realise that it is their voice that matters," Tejas replies earnestly, after pondering the question for a while, "There's always going to be other artists, what matters is what you can do, what your voice can do."

"If there is one thing I've learned from the various gigs around the country, it is gauging the mood of the crowd and how to keep them engaged. I'm not sure if this can be taught, I wish it could be," Tejas laughs as he concludes with his final statement, "You find that some of your work really connects with people, you have folks coming up to you and saying they identify with your songs, then there are gigs where you are demotivated. The important thing to remember from all of that is that you learn and you move on, as simple as that."

I fully intend on inviting the person who very boldly declared that the Indie music scene in India was dead and buried along with me to Tejas's gig on Friday evening. After spending the last few hours listening to Make It Happen on repeat and judging by the many fantastic musicians I've had the opportunity to meet over the course of this year, I'm fairly confident that the future of the Indie music scene is in good hands.

I have an older brother who is about 10 years older than me (yes, make your you are an accident jokes now) and he grew up lapped up in the culture of the 80s when India opened the floodgates to its economy in the year 1991. From the corny yet fun Masters of the Universe cartoons on TV (in Hindi no less) to cousins from America bringing with them Dungeons and Dragons, a table top pen and paper based RPG that kickstarted my love-affair with Role Playing Games and board-games which I keep to this day. While America itself had moved on to the 90s with its grunge music and pulling itself out of a the drug induced shock culture of the 80s, India was finding itself in a resurgence of culture imported from the west, with movies like Star Wars and Ghostbusters finding brand new fans, and pop-culture including the incredibly famous Seinfeld as everyone's goto choice for a Situational Comedy TV show.

Thus, I was also immersed in this culture as I was growing up. My brother had moved on to listening to Nirvana and brooding in his room, locked up all day and my parents had managed to liberate all the toys and games he had for my perusal, much to his chagrin, I imagine. I experienced, first hand, the marvels of the 80s, complete with comic books and my own Dungeons and Dragons team, all of us interested in science and playing RPGs, not to mention computer games. Those were incredible days.

So when a TV show that celebrates everything about this culture with the backdrop of a horror story inspired directly from the horror movies released in the 70s and 80s, it was like going back to being a child all over again. This was Stranger Things, a TV show nobody expected to surprise them, but everyone watched all episodes in a single day.

Set in a small sleepy town in America, Stranger Things is about strange things, as the title might tell you. It follows a bunch of young kids barely out of their single digit ages and on the cusp of becoming teenagers banding together to find their missing friend, who has been dragged to another dimension by a creature nobody understands. This, complimented by excellent performances from actors like David Harbour, who plays the town sheriff and 90s heart throb and darling of Hollywood Winona Ryder playing Will's mother, the boy who goes missing.

I don't want to make this a review of Stranger Things, that is not what this is here to talk about. This piece is being written to celebrate what Stranger Things has achieved, and by extension, what the cast and crew of the show, helmed by The Duffer Brothers, has managed to pull off in 2016: They took us back in time, effortlessly at that, with camera magic at 24 frames per second.

For it is indeed magic, how does one make a TV show that is so seeped in 80s nostalgia in 2016? How did the child actors acquaint themselves with the life and times of people that were born years before they were even alive? In fact, some of the child actor's parents themselves were kids in the time period this show is set in!

With Stranger Things Season 2 releasing tomorrow, October 27, here is my love letter to the show, a show that not only combines the best of the 80s, but also brings to us excellent performances by the cast, frames and cinematography that can give even the best directors a run for their money (except David Fincher, of course, have you watched Mindhunter lately?) and managed to become a cultural phenomenon the very same day it is released? Usually, as is the case with many big budget Hollywood movies and TV shows, the child actors are not chosen for their acting ability but for how they look and if they fit the role. As such, many times, a lot of child actors simply disappear from the show business before they hit their prime. But the kids of Stranger Things not only look absolutely right for their parts, they are excellent at their performances. Millie Bobbie Brown's performance as Eleven is, perhaps, the best child actor performance I've seen in a long time. The only one that comes close, even surpasses her ability at times, is Dafne Keen who played X-23 in Logan, the final Wolverine movie.

If you have a Netflix account, do yourself a favour and watch Stranger Things Season 1 today in preparation for Season 2. I can guarantee that you will not regret this.
"}]
"Stand up against the wrong happening around you" his words keep nagging behind my mind. If only I hadn’t been dependent on someone my life today would’ve been different. It’s been 4 years I’m married to this devil and till date, I haven’t gathered up enough courage to punch him down. Just as I was about to put the curry in the bowl I felt a tug on the corner of my shirt, my eyes then met a pair of black eyes, Zara, my daughter “Mommy grandmother and daddy are very angry. They’re asking you to bring in food as soon as possible” she said picking up the plates and left. My heart clenched looking at her. ‘Oh God, I wish I could give my daughter a better life than this’ I silently prayed. I had to serve them before they lash out at me again, so I pushed away from the thoughts and was on my way to the dining area. My body froze just as I heard a tight slap and saw my angel on the floor. “She is teaching you that, right? How dare you back answer me” He barked.

Fear and anger came rushing down in my veins. Fear because he’ll punish me again and angry because he hurt my daughter for no reason.

Nevertheless, I had to protect her. Gathering all my leftover courage I said in a low yet stern voice “Kelvin, don’t hit her. She didn’t do anything wrong. Hit me as much as you want but please don’t do anything to her”. Just as those escaped my lips, I heard my mother in law’s humourless laugh while she said: “You and your daughter are the faults in our lives”. “Then why don’t you just leave me?” I politely asked. Both of them exchanged glances then she said “I need a housemaid” followed by him “and I don’t live here so I have to keep her with a maid who wouldn’t run away and that is the only reason we won’t let you go” with that he violently caught hold of my wrist and led me to the hell to endure the torture. I didn’t fail to look back at my horrified daughter and show her a thumbs up saying “Momma is fine”.

“Momma?” I heard Zara sneak in through the curtain. Despite the pain I was drenched in, I sat up just to make her feel better. “Come in sweetheart” my voice came out broken. “I brought you a glass of water mommy,” she said handing me the glass. Her eyes glistening with tears yet she didn’t let them come out. I slowly gulped down the water and kissed her cheek. “Momma is all good Zara, don’t worry” I forced a smile. She was just looking down at her laps. Taking my hand in hers, she lifted the sleeve of my shirt only to see the fresh belt marks “After all this, you say you’re fine mommy? You are a liar” she said. I felt a pang of pain rush inside me. Not because she said I was a liar but because she had to go through all this pain because of me. Nevertheless, I had to comfort her. “No honey, this is just a little price I have to pay, to live here” “We can go far away from here mommy?” she whispered expecting I would consider her idea. ‘Oh, how I wish I can take you somewhere else to a better place than this’ I had nothing to answer her, I just kissed her forehead and let my chin rest on it.

Sensing that I had no intentions to answer her, she stood up angrily and yelled “See, you always ignore my question. You can run away if you want but I don’t understand why do you like to be tortured like this. Anyways, I just came here to tell you that I heard dad and grandmother talking that dad’s flight is tomorrow morning but he said he’ll leave today from home and stay the night in some hotel” with that she just exited the room angrily. I agree her anger is genuine but how will I ever tell her how helpless I am? No one to stand up with. Even after being a qualified engineer, even after working as an assistant professor for a year, even after having tons of brothers and sister, I stand completely helpless. Just because I wanted to give all my time to my new family I left the job, and this torture is what I get in return. My father, my hero died two years before I got married. My mother, brothers, and sisters say I have to adjust here just because they got me married to this devil, and I have to serve them till my last breath. I can not ask for a divorce because I need a home to live and I won’t get a job anywhere because it has been years I studied and I don’t remember anything. Now I'm abused by only one devil, and after divorce, I'd be abused by the whole society. Not only me but Zara too be a victim of this. When I ask my family like as in my real family they say I can not live with them just because I don’t belong to them anymore and that my daughter would have to face the world without a father. Even though they’re well aware of the fact that she is a result of marital rape.It was then I realized how my family who raised me all along just disowned me within a day.

If only I had stood up for myself before it was too late. If only I could stop the beast before allowing him to change my life. If only I had acted upon the words dad told me before dying “Stand up against the wrong happening to you”, my life would’ve been different today.

When you are alone in the house and there's no Swiggy to deliver delicious food to you but you have all the resources you need to whip yourself one up, and you still complain about there being no food in the house and rolling around on your bed, that is squarely nobody else's but your own fault.

I realised this one fine day when I was left all alone in the house and had no money to eat but the fridge and the kitchen was stocked to the brim with everything I needed to make whatever I wanted. So I decided to make myself some food, I remember making Tomato Dal and Rice, and when I ate it, I swore to learn how to cook.

Because it was horrendous.

I remember Robert Downey Jr. talking about how he turned his life around after he ate a burger so bad, he stopped and thought just what exactly he was doing with his life. As the story goes, Downey Jr. was struggling with drug abuse for years, so much so that it was affecting his professional career, with directors and casting agents simply refusing to work with him. So one day he took a drive in his open top car - he was already a famous movie star by then - and not knowing what to do and high on drugs, he stopped at a Burger King and ordered a burger.

Downey Jr. narrates this story and says that the burger he ate was so terrible, he stopped midway and thought to himself just what he was doing with his own life, he examined his life up until that point and decided that he would never use drugs again. He threw away the drugs he was carrying into the ocean and went home and into rehab.

Eating the food I cooked was my personal Robert Downey Jr. moment.

So after that moment, I've dedicated at least an hour a day to learn how to cook and, if I may be allowed this humble brag, become somewhat of a decent cook. When your friends start asking you for your recipes and make requests for some of your dishes, you know you're doing good.

Coming to the topic at hand, it doesn't matter if you can or cannot cook delicious food, what matters is that you can cook food that can sustain you. Don't put yourself on Survival mode when you have the time and resources to cook yourself a half decent meal, one that you can eat yourself and push on.

Students of today will eventually become working professionals, expecting someone to do your cooking for you is an arrogant thought that you must expunge from your mind, if you can't cook your own food, there is no way for you to complain about why there isn't any when you are privileged enough to afford the resources and often the time required. With students eventually moving to different cities for their careers, it is extremely important that you teach yourself this essential life skill.

Bon Appetite!
"}]
In a world full of chaos, finding a semblance of order is a rarity. When such an opportunity
presents itself, it is hard not to grab hold of it with both hands. Therefore, when the world’s
nations get to be a part of a common assembly where each one’s voice can be heard, one
can expect a huge turnout. This is exactly what the United Nations has achieved since its
inception. In order to create a wider understanding of the fundamental principles behind
the functioning of the UN, the concept of an MUN was born – to simulate the processes of
the actual world and look for solutions to defeat the problems that plague the world today.

txt
rich_1508917118535

Following the yearly tradition of simulating a conference that brings the best minds
together, BITSMUN ’17 kicked off with nearly 300 delegates from various parts of the
country. Simulating five committees over three days, the conference looked set to create a
benchmark for further editions. Months of preparation and organization finally came to the
forefront as the three days went without any major hiccups.

With scintillating debate, incessant lobbying and penetrating deliberation on some of the
world’s foremost issues such as LGBT rights, the Korean War, peacekeeping missions and
the Syrian and the Crimean crises, the MUN proved to be a shining beacon of intellect
channeled into productivity. As the conference reached its end, the delegates were
satisfied with their three days’ worth of work, and there was a huge sense of anticipation in
the closing ceremony hall as the prizes were announced.

Overall, it was an enlightening conference to say the least, and as the Secretary-General
declared the conference closed, one is reminded of Jacqueline Winspear’s words –
“Memories are links in a golden chain that bind us until we meet again.”

Life is an unsettling period, with many physical, emotional, psychological and social changes that accompany us.

Unrealistic expectations can create a cogent sense of rejection and can lead us to disillusionment. Many young ones feel that life not fair enough and frazzled up when things go wrong at school, college or at home. The inimical behaviour of parents and peers potentiates ones emotional distress. Dealing with pressures like making a new set of friends, which is the centre to this generation's self-esteem and also family's persuasion to get a job and their lack of understanding can result in serious depression. Despite everyone's best effort, most of us become depressed.
Depression is a disease of Loneliness. Many depressives lack emotional support because it devitalizes them and immures the victim, making it hard for them to speak up. This issue calls for prompt, appropriate treatment. Pills do not fix the problem completely, though it may incite the stability to open up. So, psychotherapy like Cognitive-behavioral therapy and problem-solving therapy play a major role in helping the person suffering from clinical depression.

Hope the readers have liked it.Do share this article among your colleagues.

THANK YOU :)

"}]
