I have always wondered why clocks, watches, timepieces etc. always say (roughly) 10:10 before you set the correct time? If you go in a store selling any kind of time-telling device, that is the default factory setting. Why is that?

First things first, let's get the myths out of the way. There are plenty of people out there who think that clocks in advertisements and in-store displays are set this way to memorialize Abraham Lincoln/John F. Kennedy/Martin Luther King Jr. because that was the time at which they were shot or died. In reality, Lincoln was shot at 10:15 p.m., and died the next morning at 7:22 a.m., JFK was shot at 12:30 p.m. CST and was pronounced dead 1 p.m. and MLK was shot 6:01 p.m. and pronounced dead at 7:05 p.m.

Another theory has it that 10:10 was the time that an atomic bomb was dropped on either Nagasaki or Hiroshima, and that the setting is in memory of the casualties. The Fat Man bomb was actually dropped on the former at 11:02 a.m. local time and the Little Boy on the latter at 8:15 a.m. local time.

The real reason for the setting? Aesthetics. The 10:10 position gives the clock or watches a number of benefits:

• The hands are not overlapping, so they're fully and clearly visible and their styling can be admired.

• The arrangement of the hands is symmetrical, which people generally find more pleasant than asymmetry, making the product more appealing to customers.

• The manufacturer's logo, usually in the center of the face under the 12, is not only visible but nicely framed by the hands.

• Additional elements on the face (like date windows or secondary dials), usually placed near the 3, 6, or 9, won't be obscured.

According to the folks at Timex (who set their products at 10:09:36 exactly), the standard setting used to be 8:20, but this made the face look like it was frowning. To make the products look "happier," the setting was flipped into a smile (occasionally, you'll still see the 8:20 setting on some clocks or watches where the manufacturer's logo is at bottom of the face above the 6).
"}]
Lal Bahadur Shastri was the second Prime Minister of independent India. He took oath after the sudden demise of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister. Relatively new to the high office, he led the country successfully through Indo-Pakistan War in 1965. He popularized the slogan ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kisan’, recognizing the need for self-sustenance and self-reliance as the pillars to build a strong nation. He was a man of exceptional will power that was belied by his small frail stature and soft-spoken manner. He wished to be remembered by his work rather than well-rehearsed speeches proclaiming lofty promises.
Lal Bahadur Shastri was born on October 2, 1904, to Ramdulari Devi and Sharada Prasad Shrivastava, in Mughalsarai, United Provinces (modern day Uttar Pradesh). He shares his birthday with Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation. Lal Bahadur was against the prevailing caste system and therefore decided to drop his surname. The title "Shastri" was given after the completion of his graduation at Kashi Vidyapeeth, Varanasi in 1925. The title "Shastri" refers to a "scholar" or a person, adept in the "Holy Scriptures". His father Sharada Prasad, a schoolteacher by profession, passed away when Lal Bahadur was barely two years old. His mother Ramdulari Devi took him and his two sisters to their maternal grandfather, Hazarilal's house. Lal Bahadur acquired virtues like boldness, love of adventure, patience, self-control, courtesy, and selflessness in his childhood. After completing his primary education at Mirzapur, Lal Bahadur was sent to Varanasi, where he stayed with his maternal uncle.
In 1928, Lal Bahadur Shastri married Lalita Devi, the youngest daughter of Ganesh Prasad. He was against the prevailing "dowry system" and so refused to accept dowry. However, on the repeated urging of his father-in-law, he agreed to accept only five yards of khadi (cotton, usually handspun) cloth as dowry. The couple had 6 children. Due to the clean image of Lal Bahadur Shastri, after the death of Nehru ji on 27th May 1964, Shastriji was given the responsibility of the country. He took over the reins of the country as the second Prime Minister of Independent India. He died on January 11, 1966 in Tashkand.
Here are some facts about Lal Bahadur Shastri, a tiny man who dwarfed the arrogant army general Ayub Khan in Tashkent and died by leaving only one dhoti-kurta and few books as property for his family.

As a complete outsider with the freedom to go around the city on my own terms, it's only natural that I come across places of interest that attract me towards it. This is by no means a comprehensive nor an objective list, this is merely a list of places that I find appealing and worth hanging out in. Check it out!

1. Lazer Ops, City Centre Mall:

Pretend you're Seal Team Six on hunt for the most dreaded terrorist on the planet, or that you're playing a round of CounterStrike with your friends, Lazer Ops is a great place to hang out with some fun activity where you tag your friends using futuristic looking guns and shooting bullets you can't see. Except they don't hurt they just make sure your guns don't work once hit. It's quite fun.

What is entropy? I'm not talking about the scientific definition of the word, no, the science behind it has long since lost its appeal on my unusually annoying and curious mind. It is the psychological implications of entropy that interest me now, the crushing inevitability of the fact that everything is bound by the damning path of entropy. A thing begins, then erodes into nothingness, it is only a matter of time, an inevitability that no matter how far we run, no matter how much we think we are invincible, entropy will come for us like judgement from the heavens itself, Death will be it's Judge, Jury and Executioner, and Change is the agent that brings about entropy for your life: your life is written in the annals of history when you achieve something tremendous or mind blowing, but it is Change that decides that your life should even begin in the first place. Your birth on this Earth is the avenue of Change with a little help from Chance, and all of it ties back to the big thread of the universe, Entropy. Everything that has a beginning must have an end.

So where does a lowly human such as yours truly come in between all this talk of entropy and the inevitability of something finishing if it begins? I'm in an old coffee shop that my friends and I used to frequent not so long ago, and it is shutting down.

If you're staring at the line above in disbelief, that's kinda how my usual thought process goes. You're sitting alone in a coffee shop which is closing, what would be your thoughts? Probably to get home, something you love, someone you love, some movie you watched that one time, the Game of Thrones episode that leaked today, lots of other things. I think about life, death, the inevitability of entropy, and a sense of irony that I must be seated in a cafe that has become a victim of it.

I spent a lot of my student life here, talking to and making friends, making life long connections, laughing, crying, bonding, all memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Much like the friendships I made, not everything will remain the same as time ticks on, things change, relationships change, places disappear. It simply is inevitable.

So here I am, pretending to be a stereotypical metrosexual hipster, with my MacBook and Cappucino in a Cafe that is soon to be closed forever, writing the final blog I'll ever write from this place. This piece isn't meant to be a guide or something you should remember, but simply a bell to remind you to form relationships in college that stand the test of time. Good people are valuable and come through for you no matter what happens. Good people are the ones who, even for a small infinitesimal amount of time in the grand scheme of the universe, manage to prove entropy wrong.

But Entropy is eternal, and entropy always wins. Just look at the coffee shop I'm writing this blog from.
"}]

In the mountain of mediocrity that is Indian Mainstream Cinema, Rahman brings to it music that alleviates it to legendary status. It also helps that the movies Rahman has scored for also happen to be some of the most iconic movies ever made.
So, on his birthday, here's my list of the best 5 songs Rahman has composed, according to me.
1. Roja
What is even there to say about this song? If there's ever been anything like musical perfection, Red Hot Chilli Pepper's Stadium Arcadium, Metallica's '...And Justice For All', Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' and this movie's music album come the closest. The shining star of Roja's album? The titular song you can listen below. Of course, it has both Tamil and Hindi versions and while I strongly encourage listening to the Tamil version, I've linked the Hindi version below, because you know, wider audience and all.
Side note: Watch this movie, it's incredible.

2. Kehna Hi Kya From Bombay:
Mani Ratnam's Bombay is easily one of the best Indian movies ever made, with a fantastic plot and progression. Unlike regular Indian cinema, however, the music score in this movie is not a immersion and pacing breaking affair, but a character within itself, and who better to score for a movie like this than the Maestro himself?
Oh and this isn't even the best song in the album, this movie also features all time greats like Humma Humma. I'm particularly partial to Tu Hi Re, but this one is more iconic and frankly has a soft spot in my heart.

3.
