"Follow your passion" has become a well-worn phrase. A new year is upon us. Us as in the Hindu majority of this country. Today, i.e. the 6th of April 2019, is going be celebrated as New Year’s Day in the Hindu calendar. A day for celebration for crowds and diasporas across the country albeit under different names. In Hyderabad, a city where I grew up, and continue to live, today’s festival holds great importance. Not only as a day of celebration but as a day of getting together under the same bamboo roofs, next to a bowl of mangoes while an elder in the family tries to get back in touch with the kid that you once were.

Ugadi has not been, a day of huge impact for me as a child. It didn’t have the color or the noise and spectacle. It didn’t give me week long vacation from school. Nor did it bring the excitement of buying new clothes (Mostly because at this point in the Indian year, all you want to wear is tees and a pair of shorts). But to take my experience with such a big festival as the metric for it’s importance would be illogical. To the millions of people from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, who aren’t me, Ugadi is nothing short of the most important part of the year. It marks the start of something new. A new year, a new chapter, an empty book. A book with new possibilities ahead, with news of rains and harvest, prosperity and difficulties, health and sickness, a promise of joy and growth. For most farmers, this marks the completion of the Rabi crop harvesting. Considering this day is regarded as day 1 of the new year, most farmers stockpile on the harvest income and wait for men in orange clothing to describe the future of their hard work. The theme of tradition is common all across the festival.

Tradition is a strong motivator. It demands certain things to be done a certain way at a certain point of time. Hardly with a need for questioning or cross talk. Tradition is important in that sense, maybe, our lives wouldn’t have the same sense of structure without it.

At the beginning of the day, all houses are pampered with mango leaves, keeping the entrances lively by washing up the dust accumulated in the cracks and corners. Fixating neem flowers, is believed to prevent skin rashes from entering into the house, I have to check the science on that one, don’t quote me on it. The wooden thresholds washed and refurnished with a coating of turmeric. All brings the house alive, thriving for human activity as a sense of homeliness sets in. Everyone from the kids to the elderly oil their hair, wash it up, wear fresh pressed new clothing, and like clockwork visit a temple or sit down on what I consider a lazy holiday, in front of the TV sets to listen to the year that awaits them.

As you might be aware, if the said steps are followed correctly, it get’s you a pass into getting a sneak peak into how your mythical star will fair in terms of a point based system over the course of the upcoming year. Scoring you on the basis of luck, respect, depression, insult and other very technical aspects I wouldn’t want to go into. Now these numbers are definitely very authentic coming from a podium of a bearded old monk in a very religious orange or white attire with a book of intense mathematics, known as a Panchangam. Most households purchase a miniature copy of this manuscript in order to help themselves to a better understanding.

Here comes the most important part of any Indian festival, the food.

Ugadi has a very characteristic menu for delicacies. Unlike other festivals where dishes like wadas, or yellow rice are stable or common place, Ugadi has a special concoction of sweet, sour and spice, known famously as the Ugadi pacchadi. This syrup is a festival of flavours in your mouth opening every closed sinus and activating every taste bud to leave you with a click of the tongue at the end of the tasteful journey. This pacchadi has some standard ingredients each of which are symbolic of a mindset/experience a person will have during the course of the year. For example, jaggery, sweet in taste is symbolic of happiness;

Green chillies, spicy, are symbolic of anger; Raw Mango, sour, surprises or unexpected events, ..etc
This festival is vital for our need to know our future, to exercise control on variables not really in our basket. This is something very close to the belief system of our community in general. But it does however, bring a very important thing back to a family, a sense of belonging under a same roof, for a day at the least, unplugging from their urban lifestyles to taste a bit of historic traditional and social values. Hope everyone has a good year ahead, especially all the students reading this. Happy Ugadi, Nutana naama samvatsaram shubhakaankshalu!

One of the biggest mistakes I made was not starting my business in college. People think that once their college is over, they'll have enough free time to do whatever they want, they believe that post-college is basically the time they are going to seriously invest in starting up and putting their heart mind and soul to it.

It brings me great pleasure that I am here to bust that myth. You, the student, have the best free time you will ever have in your entire lives. You don't have to run around and make money, there aren't mounting responsibilities on you, your free time is mostly hanging out with friends, and other assorted activities which I'm sure brought a smile on your face when you read this line.

I'm not the type of guy who has many regrets, and yet, one of the biggest regrets that I have right now is the fact that I didn't actually bother to take time off my monotonous college life, which I intensely hated including all my classmates (sorry guys), and that I didn't act upon the many ideas I struck upon while in college. Believing that I was too stupid, too poor or too lazy to do so, the last part of which is absolutely true, I wasted away 4 years of engineering doing absolutely nothing, licking my emotional wounds and dealing with depression.

I miss being a student sometimes because being one meant I had the freedom to dream. That's not to say that I did not dream, I did, a lot of it, but I never acted upon them at all. My laziness, which I admit is the greatest weakness I have, ruined whatever plans I had of actually going through with my plans. Post-college, if your parents can cover your costs, pat yourself on the back for being born in a house privileged enough for you to do just that, like yours truly for example.

The thing about responsibilities is that they sneak up on you, whether you like it or not. It could be due to various factors and personal disgust and your wasteful life is one of them. The other thing about responsibilities is that the longer you try to run from them, the harder they'll hit you, a fact I fully understood late last year when I had nowhere to go and was on the verge of another breakdown.

I had hoped that my startup would be a way for me to take care of my responsibilities later, in a way it was an elaborate scheme to avoid my responsibilities all over again. However, before we digress any further, allow me to explain why you're reading my sob story: one of the biggest reasons I failed my startup venture is because I ran out of time. I couldn't, in good faith, leech off my parents anymore and decided to leave New Delhi and come back to Hyderabad and find a job doing what I wanted to do in the first place, writing.

I failed because I didn't realise the value of starting up right from college where I would have the time and flexibility to work on my idea and my product, instead of wasting away a year after college and then starting up. We ran into plenty of problems, all of which were handled with a sense of urgency not because we wanted to get work done fast, but because we had an omnipresent feeling of running out of time. Tick tock, tick tock, the clock would mock us, laughing in our faces as we struggled each day trying to get our product out, working on the ground and on our product back at our office, which was basically the home we had rented. I miss that place now.

But my story is just an example, and this isn't about me. This is about you making your own stories and craving your path when your path is at its softest. Time is not your friend when it comes to startups, every day must be a productive day, every day you must be willing to nurture and protect your idea, willing to go the extra mile to make sure your idea gets further, and the best time to do it is a time where you have no responsibilities, but a gift, a gift of dreaming about who or what you want to be, and also the gift of failure.

Failure is something you must come to terms with eventually, it is the greatest teacher you'll ever have. Failure teaches you, in excruciating detail, the mistakes you've made. Learning from them or feeling sad for yourself because of them is a matter of personal choice, something that doesn't come easy but it can be learned.

Of all the teachers I've personally had, failure has been the best. I'm proud to be a drop out today, I'm proud that my startup has failed, because without it I would have never confronted the fact that I have always wanted to write, to share stories, to make stories and to put my thoughts on paper, whether with rage or with love and kindness, that depended on what I was writing about.

And it is failure why you should consider starting up in college. When you're a student, the safety net around you is big enough to catch you when you fail, and you will fail, eventually, but that doesn't mean it's the end of your life. Failure's singular purpose is holding a big sign right in front of your face, showing you exactly what went wrong, so embrace it, learn from your failures, and keep pushing forward. There will never be a better time to do so than when you're a student, willing to learn from your mistakes.

Embrace your destiny, because the time to startup was yesterday, and the world will never stop for us.
"}]
This is that time of the year when all the final year students are worried about their comprehensive VIVA. After hectic major project and project reviews, students are now extremely nervous for their VIVA because they would be asked random questions from any corner of their engineering books which are hardly touched.

So here is list of things that can help you deal with your comprehensive VIVA.

txt
rich_1491893853234

1. Syllabus:

Most importantly you need to be aware of the entire syllabus of your engineering right from your first year. Be thorough with at least the content in that particular subject; recall all the units and prepare for probable questions. If your examiner is kind and probably in a good mood, you could get away with simple questions like name any 8 units in your favourite subject. So recall the entire syllabus of your engineering.

Research about what could be the probable questions from units. Take feedback from your seniors or associate professors about how the pattern is going to be. Find out reference material for each subject. If you are asked to choose a subject and topic from which you would be asked questions, be clever to answer the subjects and units you know perfectly. 3. Be Thorough With Your Basics:

Most importantly be thorough with your basics. Invariably the examiners prefer to ask basic questions regarding their subject For example SI unit of Force, the definition of velocity, etc. Make a list of all the topics in the syllabus and prepare for all the relevant questions. 4. Study Material:

There are many reference material available for comprehensive VIVA. It covers the basic and standard objective questions. The best idea is to rely on your textbooks. 5. Impress Your Faculty:

The way you behave, your mannerisms also is important. If you are in the bad books of the professor than you are likely to get easy and predictable questions. So make sure you impress your professors and be a well-behaved student to have a smooth and successful VIVA.

In Nizambad-Jagtial Lok Sabha constituency, on the last day of nominations, the Election commission received 190+ nominations, all filed by farmers and now the total nominations have increased to 245.

The farmers were irritated after their elected representatives failed to provide minimum support price for turmeric and maize, which are the major agriculture- produce in the region. The cost of turmeric 10 years ago was 10,000 per quintal now it has gone below to 4,000 per quintal. The former government even promised to provide a Turmeric research center in Nizambad-Jagtial region and this has never happened. The irritated farmers united and filed the nominations who wanted their voice of suffering and distress reach New delhi. Eventually this created havoc in the hearts of ruling party and contesting candidates from major political parties and it grabbed the attention of national media and thus this issue become a hot debate across the length and breadth of the country.

Why ballot papers now ??

EVMs have replaced conventional ballot paper voting system and now they are used for recording votes across India in all general elections.

A EVM consists of a ballot unit, the voting machine and Control unit, the vote recording machine. EVMs can cater to a maximum of 64 candidates (including NOTA). There is provision for 16 candidates in one Balloting Unit. If the total number of candidates exceeds 16, a second Balloting Unit can be linked in series to the first Balloting Unit. Similarly, if the total number of candidates exceeds 32, a third Balloting Unit can be attached and if the total number of candidates exceeds 48, a fourth Balloting Unit can be attached to cater to a maximum of 64 candidates (Including NOTA).

Though in EVMs manufactured after 2013(Upgraded Post-2006 version) 24 Balloting units can be attached to one control unit catering to a maximum of 384 candidates (including NOTA),this has been never practically tested in any general election so far.

For catering of 245 candidates names + a NOTA requires 16 ballot unit linked in series. Such an arrangement would have following implications

1. An arrangement of 16 ballot units might occupy an entire room in poll station, which would interrupt easy conduct of election and movement of voters in and out of polling station.

2.Voters may face hardships in finding the candidate name & symbol of their choice in 16 ballot units.

3. Most importantly, such arrangements of 16 ballot units has to done in all polling stations in Nizambad- Jagityal constituency. The number of polling station is more than 1500.

4. Lastly, procurement, transfer of EVMs before and after elections would be a daunting task for Election Commission representatives.

So, Election Commission may shift to ballot papers, which is again a daunting task or postpone the elections of in that single constituency for a while.

The final decision rest with the Election Commission, Let's wait and see what happens.

Either way voice of farmers has been heard by the whole nation and let's hope the winning party will bring down their suffering and distress and make necessary steps to provide minimum price for their agriculture produce.
"}]
The biggest river island of the world, Majuli, is situated in the Brahmaputra river. In 2016, it was the first island to be made a district in India. It can be reached through a ferry from the Nimati Ghat, which is located in the nearest town of Jorhat, Assam. Travellers can easily enjoy a breathtaking view of the mighty Brahmaputra while on the ferry. Though it is place with a rich history of culture and heritage, Majuli faces the brunt of floods and erosion every year, and nothing much has been done to prevent it.

Majuli has been the cultural capital of Assam since the 16th century, when the great pioneer of the neo-Vaishnavite movement, Srimanta Sankardeva visited the island and established monasteries and hermitages known as satras. Many of The Satras still survive and have carried out the traditional rituals since centuries. These Satras serve as the main tourist destinations for the hundreds of tourists around the world flocking to the island every year. It is a wetland, and thus has a rich diversity of flora and fauna.Tourists often the chance to go bird watching, as it offers them a wide range of options. Ali aye ligang, a cultural festival, is celebrated during mid-February every year with great grandeur.

But unfortunately, Majuli has been a victim of floods and soil erosion over the years. About 33% of the island has been eroded since the 20th century and around 35 villages have been washed away since 1990-1991. Surveys report that the island would disappear due to erosion, 15-20 years from now. The state government has done all it can, but in vain. The fury of the Brahmaputra never lets Majuli away from it's grip. The Union Government has pledged around 55 Million USD to save the island. Proposals have also been sent to UNESCO to declare it as a world heritage site. All efforts should be continuously maintained to save this great island from extinction.
