When even the famous philosopher and profound nihilist Friedrich Nietzsche says, 'Without music, life would be a mistake', you get a sense of the importance of music in a person's life. For we are not machines to function mindlessly, a clockwork machine that begins and stops working at the appointed hour. Human beings, whether fortunately or unfortunately, are emotional beings, and to us emotional beings, art and music speak a language that cannot be described in something as philistine as words.

So, as fate would have it, a work assignment put me on the path to The Galley Cafe, a quaint coffee shop attached to a gorgeous art gallery right off the main road in Banjara Hills, Road No. 10. My colleague and a regular to The Gallery Cafe informed me that an open mic session was to be held and we decided we should cover it, especially since its unique position to attract young talent from across Hyderabad.

Of course, this is Hyderabad; arriving fashionably late is what makes us who we are, and to nobody's surprise, we were late and fortunately for me, there was nobody to judge for I spotted only one familiar face in the crowd: 18-year old Sidharth Bendi, a musician I had interviewed a few weeks ago, which you can find by clicking here. Sidharth was quick to introduce me to the who's who of the event, and we set off taking pictures and speaking to the performers.

First up on our list is Hemunth Kumar, who was performing when we walked into the beautiful cafe. The crowd was enthusiastic, cheering him on with each song as he continued to impress, outdoing himself with every song he performed. Speaking after his performance, the 18-year old said, "I'm more of a vocalist that a guitarist, really," he smiles, "I started learning Carnatic vocals at the age of 3, picking up the guitar was a recent affair, in 9th class in fact."
The young man, about to start his Mechanical Engineering course at SRM University in Chennai, speaks further about his inspirations and future plans, "I'm a huge fan of A.R. Rahman and Sid Sriram. Both have been quite an inspiration for me, motivating me to do what I do," he says. When asked where does he see himself in 5 years, he was quick to respond, "I aim to support young artists in the city, help them grow and hone their craft. It'll be a dream come true. It was like being transported to an era of cassettes and tape recorders when we would rush home to watch Doordarshan and listen to songs on the radio.
Following Sashaank's incredible performance, a band with no name - don't blame me because that is what the vocalist said - that I've decided to call The Band With No Name (consider picking this up guys, lots of marketing potential), took to stage to give us soulful tracks from movies like Rock On. When pointed in the right direction, Ali managed to get himself a slot for a performance and came to the back of the cafe where we eventually shared a table. It was during our conversation here that he revealed he was a poet, "I write poems in Urdu," he said, opening a dairy and leafing through the pages, as if unsure which poem to share with the audience on stage. Petya, a new ransomware that hit the internet a few days ago, quickly spreading through Windows computers connected to the network, activated on Tuesday evening, crippling many essential services, including a Cadbury factory in Australia (and we know what a big tragedy that is.)

We've already written at length about what a ransomware is here. We highly suggest you go through it once again, just in case.
So back to the topic at hand: another month, another ransomware. Microsoft, sensing trouble beforehand, acted quickly to patch the hole in Windows 10, but couldn't do so for systems older than Windows 8, as it had mostly stopped support. This led to many millions of computers still running on older Windows software ripe for being attacked just because the computer was connected to the internet.

It goes without saying that people are not exactly that tech savvy when it comes to protecting their identities online, a vast majority of the people online today cannot be bothered to even have strong passwords to protect their very important IDs. We are a nosy people, some of us dedicate our entire lives to gossip and put our noses in other people's business, and it is socially accepted because there is a systematic scoffing of the concept of privacy. How many times has your mother or father knocked on your door asking you why you need to keep it locked? Everyone assumes the worst of the other person here as if needing privacy is something dirty.
The attitude that you only need privacy if you have something to hide needs to change, because of everyone, every last one of us, has something to hide. If you believe that one only needs privacy if they have something to hide, I would very much like your bank ID and passwords, thank you very much.
The larger point here is that we need to take better care of the gadgets we use to get our work done, and reading about news reports where essential services have been crippled due to ransomware just makes me sad. As stated earlier, the spread was similar to WannaCry; the leak from NSA by a group calling themselves Shadow Brokers caused unavoidable backdoors into millions of computer systems around the world to be left exposed and vulnerable.

Some startups in India have a very lax attitude of data security as well with no idea how terrible things are gonna be when they do actually lose their access to that data.

But then again, this is India.

But that is a story for another time.

Stay safe out there, it's a minefield.
"}]

Engineering finishes quicker than you think. Before you know it, you’re pacing down the time with assignments, projects, internships and a million different subjects, units and chapters to study. Personally, I think it goes faster than you realise because you enjoy it. You enjoy the sport, movies or parties you have with your friends. You enjoy socialising and spending time doing things that you want pursue later on in your life. If you enjoy what you're studying, then it makes your under-grad journey even more rewarding.
Since I have only still completed 2 years of the 4 year term, I would like to look back and highlight some differences or changes that I’ve personally realized over this period.

1) Attendance

This is probably the most haunting part of any engineering student’s life (slightly beating backlogs). The fear that at the end of the academic year aggregate attendance would not cross the 75% barrier is known to many students. Here’s how it changed from the first year to the second for me, in my first month as an engineering student, the only occasion I would even conceive the idea of missing a class would be falling sick or an appointment I could not miss. Whereas in my second year, once I got to know which subject was interesting enough for me to stay back, I would sit in place. In any other case, I would use black magic and the power of mathematics to calculate the number of classes I would need to attend to dodge any sort of condonation fine from the college.

2) Assignments

Trust me when I say this, I did not miss a single assignment in my first year. Always on time to submit and complete in solutions. I guess the fear of losing 5 marks diminishes as time goes on in engineering. You slowly start to realize that it is easier to score the same 5 marks in the public exams rather than doing these 3 page problems or Q&As. Something that never works and something that I would definitely like to change in the next two years.

3) College fests

Oh this. The spectacle of a college fest, in the beginning, college fests generally are about hanging out in party wear with your friends and having no classes for a day or two. They probably lose their charm with repetitive attractions or you grow out of them. As someone who has never been a part of the group that performs, I really don’t have the right to comment upon the importance of these fests. They undoubtedly serve a good purpose. They help budding artists from the college get the recognition they deserve, they help showcase the special talents students possess and have trained hard on acquiring.

4) Career choices

The seriousness sets in and intensifies as you grow older. The need for short listing your priorities and getting some professional experience under your belt as an intern or a part time employee is vital. It may not seem very plausible in your first year, but it sure does pull ones attention in the 2nd and 3rd year of engineering.

txt
rich_1498583068091

5) Backlogs

It is ok to fail. Not regularly, but it is fine to wobble or hit a couple of obstacles along the way. You get another chance to redeem yourself, don’t make the same mistakes twice and clear the subjects before they pile up.

6) Ragging

As someone from a college that tackles ragging head on, it wasn't a problem. As a senior now, it is a duty and a responsibility on my part to not be a part of the crime. Every fresher deserves the joy of enjoying college from day 1. No person has the reason or motive to curb such freedom.
"}]
The importance of travel in one's life, especially for students. It puts one in touch with different people, different cultures, different everything and most of the time, changes a person's perspective on the world entirely. This change in perspective is extremely important for students, as in just a few years, these students head out to face the real world in many ways. Travel is something that also prepares students to take on challenges and handle them. But considering the expenses involved and typical Indian family scenarios where students can't just walk up to their parents and announce that they want to travel, it becomes tricky and for most, even impossible.

So what is the easiest way for students to travel? The answer lies in your college itself, in fact, the answer lies in every college across the country. Every college has that one time every year when students from all over can come together to learn and explore. If you still haven't gotten it, I'm talking about college fests.

Premier institutions like the IITs, IIMs, NITs, etc have some of the biggest tech and cultural fests in the country. The fact that most of these institutions are located in smaller cities adds to the appeal of travel for students. Attending a fest at colleges away from your city gives you that much needed opportunity to travel, in addition to racking up certificates onto your resume.

Another reason as to why students should travel this way is the kind of events that keep happening at these fests. Taking part in these fests enables students to focus on practical aspects of engineering, as most of these fests involve building something and using that to take part in competitions. From robotics to building planes to presenting research papers, these fests offer a chance to students to learn a lot more, to complement their college education.

Apart from the memorable fun that you'll have with your friends on the trip, interacting with students from all over the place at these fests is another major advantage towards travelling this way. From my personal experience, the conversations I had with people I met at fests went a long way towards shaping my career the way it is now.

One of the best parts about travelling to premier institutions is that many times, railways and airlines offer a concession for students travelling to these fests, it'll become slightly easier convincing the family!

If you are a student in an engineering college, then this is the right time for you to start preparing for college fests, as most of the technical fests happen in August-October period, giving you ample time to work on the project that you wish to present there.
