Jack comes from a middle class family . Though he understands his family conditions sometimes he becomes stubborn . The family's income is just enough to meet the basic requirements . Jack asks his father for a cooler as summer began and he is unable to bare the heat . His mother explains him that they cannot afford that much amount to buy a cooler at this time as they are running low on other commodities which are more important . As he is stubborn he doesn't understand the situation and ignore their reasons . The day goes on with his continuous whining .

After dinner , he went to the park to spend some time as he was not feeling sleepy , he started gazing at the sky and began to think about the day . Suddenly he felt a presence beside him . First he thought it was nothing but there was a constant feeling that someone is watching him . At last he turned around and saw Thor ( the character from avengers ) watching him closely . He immediately felt he was dreaming but when he realized that it is not , he eagerly approached him and sat on the bench beside Thor . Thor began speaking saying what your mother said is true , there are other things which need more attention like your school , health , food etc. Buying a cooler will be a burden to them . Thor asks Jack as to what are the features one requires in a fan . Jack replies that speed , cool air , low electricity , more durability , trust worthy brand and most important cost effective . Thor says that when we have all the features required in a fan why do we need a cooler . There is a fan of brand Usha which possess all the details what you have mentioned . It also has a wide range of choice . Thor using his one of the super powers takes Jack to the showroom and show him the fan . The superpowers of Thor include strength , speed , flight , durability the fan also has some of the qualities of Thor . Thor also gives the information about the importance of the fan . He convinces Jack by using his superpower flight .

When they return Jack asks Thor a question why is he telling him all these things . Thor answers " When we cannot afford to buy we need to think of ways to achieve it .Do not feel disappointed when people say no ". Here is a way to achieve what you want . You need to take part in a quiz competition . If you win you will receive a cash prize along with a fan of the most popular brand . Jack instantly becomes happy hearing this and hugs Thor out of excitement . Then Jack's father comes in search of him and calls Jack as it is getting late . After answering his father Jack turns to see that Thor has disappeared . Jack tells his father about the whole incident and his father thinks it's not true because they are fictional . Jack sleeps peacefully on that day as his dream about meeting his favourite actor came true .

The next day , Jack's father realizes that what Jack said was true as Jack returns home with the cash price and the fan . Jack made his parents proud and achieved what he wanted .

Twitter, Instagram, Facebook. Snapchat and whatnots are there that we use to declare ourselves connected to the Social World. This serves a purpose to connect us with people, while at the same time, it also serves as a façade to hide our feeling and portray a pseudo image of ours to the outside world.

People, at times, use this presence as an alternative to the real world. In 2016, nearly 44.7 million adults(18+ Age group) in the US had a mental illness. The age bracket of 18-25 had the highest presence of any mental illness at 22.1% when compared to the age bracket of 26-49 at 21.1% and age bracket of 50+ at 14.5%.

A term is known as “Facebook depression” arises from children’s excessive use of social media. A report by the AAP(American Academy of Pediatrics) defines it as “depression that develops when teenagers and preteenagers spend too much time on social media sites and then showcase classic symptoms of depression due to the pressure of the online world.” This something not only limited to Facebook but extending to all the Social Media channels, the individuals are opting.

The factors contributing to depression include the different measures of popularity that Facebook generates within the individual. In particular, social media channels can make kids feel inadequate when seen in stark contrast to their friend tallies, status updates, and the pictures of others having a good time, what the individual experiences on the Social media is only one way of the reality. The photos and videos shared don’t portray what the reality is, it just uncovers only one face of the Moon, while the rest lingers in an unseen reality. With this fugitive image, the others develop a full-fledged reality amongst themselves, which in turn creates pressure to outshine with respect to others, which failing to attain, moves the person to anger, followed by abnormal behavior.

So, If you’re spending way too much time on social media, this is imbibing feelings of sadness, frustration, or loneliness, to your life, it may be time to re-evaluate your online habits and find a new balance.

It is a normal Saturday. You wake up, get ready and sit down to have brunch. Your mom serves you some rice and some dal. You pull out your phone from your pocket and scroll through Instagram. There you see someone eating lasagna at the back waters of Maldives, you envy them. You go up to your room and decide to study. Just one last check of Whatsapp and you see that your cousins have decided to bake cookies, you make a mental note to bake some later for yourself. Anyway, you put your phone down and study for a while and decide to take a break on Netflix and peek through Facebook as your show buffers. You notice your friends Gym selfie and productivity check list, you wonder when the last time you released some endorphins. Your favorite character dies in the show, you’re so heartbroken. Puppy videos and memes on Pinterest salvage your mood. This flow of ups and downs keeps lingering. Your boredom turns into activity, your contentment into resentment, your distress into hope. You are exposed to so much content that it is bound to influence you. These influences can be both positive and negative.

Well let us start with the bright side. Social media allows us to stay in touch with our friends and family, a commodity which was non-existent a decade ago. It also allows individuals to be part of communities and causes that they place confidence in. They get to be a part of like-minded groups from all over the world which unifies us globally. They get to promote important issues and state their opinions on them. Social media is a great outlet for art and creativity. Nowadays, there is a Picasso in every street and a Shakespeare in every house. All art forms have a platform for exhibition. Through social media one stumbles upon in-numerous workshops, webinars and podcasts which only help them perfect existing skills or imbibe new ones.

On the contrary, Social media has given birth to a new world’s disease known as FOMO. FOMO or ‘Fear of Missing Out’ is a new dilemma that we as a society face. Constant comparison of our lives with the theatrics of the one’s we see online leads to the feeling of us living an inadequate life. One in four people suffer from anxiety and depression. Anxiety is the feeling of magnified worry and depression the state of goal-lessness. This pressure of posting a perfect selfie and adhering to a certain lifestyle to be accepted causes agony, such pain that goes unnoticed because of its prevalent nature. Many individuals use social media as a fuel for approval and derive their self-worth from the likes and comments they receive. These false methods of validation are of course hazardous. How can one truly be happy if their self-value is left at the hands of their friends, acquaintances or anyone other than themselves really? Social media is also used as a camouflage, sad people portray as though they are happy. It is almost as though they pretend to feel something else as a coping mechanism for their true feelings. This will eventually either lead to a melt down or cause worse complications. Cyber-bullying is another menace that is becoming rampant as we make advancements in technology.

Some symptoms to watch out for, to keep ourselves in check; to identify if we are falling into the hell hole of Social media include-- if we spend more time on these platforms than with our real friends and family, If we constantly compare ourselves unfavorably with those on social media or experience cyber bullying. It is important for us to notice this. If we suddenly have no time for self-reflection or if we rely on likes for self love then we are target to the negative influence of social media. If we turn nocturnal and find it hard to sleep and observe increasing symptoms of anxiety or depression we must make changes and reach out to seek help.

Therefore, my conclusion is YES! Social media and mental health do have a very direct relation. It is a beautiful paradox that represents how we have brought far ones close and shoved the close ones far. One must keep in mind that Social media isn’t real. It’s a collection, a memoir of people’s happiest memories. It’s a fabricated representational view into someone’s life. You only see what they show you. It is as though you are a horse with blinkers, examining someone else’s existence. It’s best to use social media for connectivity and growth and even entertainment. Once you start to suffocate due to its drawbacks; breathe a little, take a break from it and do what is best for you. Don’t succumb to this ruthless cycle of comparison and self-loathing. Tell yourself—you matter, you don’t have to be the same as those you see, you are born an original. We are all intricately unique.
"}]

Staying away from social media can do be one of the best things you can do for your mental health

Yes, there is a huge correlation between social media and mental health.

Human beings are social creatures. We need the companionship of others to thrive in life, and the strength of our connections has a huge impact on our mental health and happiness. Being socially connected to others can ease stress, anxiety, and depression, boost self-worth, provide comfort and joy, prevent loneliness, and even add years to your life. On the flip side, lacking strong social connections can pose a significant risk to your mental and emotional health.

In today’s world, many of us rely on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, YouTube, and Instagram to find and connect with each other. While each has its benefits, it’s important to remember that social media can never be a replacement for real-world human connection. It requires in-person contact with others to trigger the hormones that alleviate stress and make you feel happier, healthier, and more positive. Ironically for a technology that’s designed to bring people closer together, spending too much time engaging with social media can actually make you feel more lonely and isolated—and exacerbate mental health problems such as anxiety and depression.

If you’re spending an excessive amount of time on social media and feelings of sadness, dissatisfaction, frustration, or loneliness are impacting your life, it may be time to re-examine your online habits and find a healthier balance.

Especially in the year 2020 due to COVID-19, everyone has stuck at home and therefore people who are using social media have increased. As most people don't have work as they are at home, people are more addicted to accessing social media more than the pre-COVID situation, which is resulting in a mentally conditioned environment and a nonproductive way of living.

Signs that social media is impacting on mental health
Everyone is different and there is no specific amount of time spent on social media, or the frequency you check for updates or the number of posts you make that indicates your use is becoming unhealthy. Rather, it has to do with the impact time spent on social media has on your mood and other aspects of your life, along with your motivations for using it.

For example, your social media use may be problematic if it causes you to neglect face-to-face relationships, distracts you from work or school, or leaves you feeling envious, angry, or depressed. Similarly, if you’re motivated to use social media just because you’re bored or lonely, or want to post something to make others jealous or upset, it may be time to reassess your social media habits.

Indicators that social media could also be adversely affecting your psychological state include:

Spending more time on social media than with real-world friends. Using social media has become a substitute for tons of your offline social interaction. Even if you’re out with friends, you still feel the need to constantly check social media, often driven by feelings that others may be having more fun than you.

Comparing yourself unfavorably with others on social media. You have low self-esteem or negative body image. You may even have patterns of disordered eating.

Experiencing cyberbullying. Or you worry that you have no control over the things people post about you.

Being distracted at school or work. You feel pressure to post regular content about yourself, get comments or likes on your posts, or respond quickly and enthusiastically to friends’ posts.

Having no time for self-reflection. Every spare moment is filled by engaging with social media, leaving you little or no time for reflecting on who you are, what you think, or why you act the way that you do—the things that allow you to grow as a person.

Engaging in risky behavior in order to gain likes, shares, or positive reactions on social media. You play dangerous pranks, post embarrassing material, cyberbully others, or access your phone while driving or in other unsafe situations.

Suffering from sleep problems. Do you check social media last thing at night, first thing in the morning, or even when you wake up in the night? The light from phones and other devices can disrupt your sleep, which in turn can have a serious impact on your mental health.

Worsening symptoms of anxiety or depression. Rather than helping to alleviate negative feelings and boost your mood, you feel more anxious, depressed, or lonely after using social media.

Steps for modifying social media use to improve mental health

Step 1: Reduce time online

Step 2: Change your focus

Step 3: Spend more time with offline friends

Step 4: Express gratitude

I conclude social media usage has dangerous effects for the younger generation because problems related to mental health which get developed during a young period can act as an epidemic for any individual throughout life.

The most critical question one should ask oneself is whether there is a tradeoff between the health and economic risks, or could we sensibly balance them. The answer is that there is no ‘health versus economics’ dichotomy. With the number of cases reaching 2lakhs and thousands of people dead and infected, Covid is posing a grace threat to both the economy as wealth as to the health sector. With the continuous increase in the number of cases and the closed businesses may give an economic shock that could be severe compared to the financial crisis in 2008 or even to the Great Depression in the 1930s.

txt

The covid-19 pandemic has resulted in nation-wide lockdowns across the globe and India has also borne the brunt of it, with a lockdown that started in March and is still going on. This, in turn, has affected the economy drastically and there have been mass lay-offs in both big companies and startups. This is also a scenario where the chances of a job-offer-letter being honoured are also low. With a scenario like this, it is imperative for students to upskill themselves with recession-proof skills and also with skills that put you ahead of the competition.

Upskilling yourself has two benefits, one is that it will broaden your horizon, putting a wide range of jobs in your league as you'd have the necessary skills to qualify for the position and the other is that it will also demonstrate your intention and your work-ethic. It will show the recruiter that you are a self-starter who has picked up certain skills without anyone prodding you to, the way a college or a school would. An easy way to upskill yourself now would be to take online courses on subjects like AI/ML, Content Writing, Graphic Design, Social Media Marketing, Digital Marketing, Big Data, etc; subjects that will be utilised in the future and subjects that will stay relevant always.

Another factor that you need to do at this point in life is that find a mentor, someone in the industry of your choice, who has been actively involved in that industry for quite some time now and knows the ups and downs, pros and cons of working in that industry. Through this, you'll not only find out more about the industry but you will also get connected to someone who can refer you for a job or even offer you a job, if necessary.

An easy way for you to do all this, is to become a stuMagz VIP member, wherein you will have access to online courses on a wide range of subjects, for a discounted price, you will have access to e-Books on developing essential skills like speaking skills, writing skills, etc; in addition to mentor-connect, a unique program where you will have a one-on-one session with a mentor from an industry of your choice!
