“First years, this way”, someone called out.

It was no Hagrid; they were not in Hogwarts, trying to learn magic. They did not have to wear robes and pointed hats or even a magic wand, for that matter. But still, there ought to be a Dumbledore, a McGonagall and a Snape, somewhere on the campus. There could be friends like Ron and Hermione and rivals like Malfoy. But the million dollar question is what would happen here and more importantly, who is the Hero? Who will be ‘Harry Potter’?!?!

txt
rich_1486047150907

Most people usually find their way in and out of college, with no much thought to the process. The beginning and end matter to most people. I am a girl who hates pink.

I am a girl whose father is the best cook ever.

I am a girl and I can beat any boy in sport events.

I am girl who has witnessed her brother cry in emotional parameters of life.

People tend to create stereotype for a person from the moment he/she arrives in this world. If it’s a baby girl, all pink clothes and pretty dolls to shop for, else if it’s a baby boy one must always opt for motorbike or car toys.Nobody gets to see a baby boy wearing a pink t-shirt with a pretty Barbie doll in hand playing house-house. Nor does anyone gets to see someone asking a girl to not shed tears in pain just because she is a girl.

“Boys don’t cry” is one of the most irrelevant stereotype based on gender. A person in state of misery, pain or is in a state of emotional imbalance in life, must have their own rights to deal with such situations. The most appropriate way to overcome a problem in emotional terms is to shed out tears. The moment when boys break down there is always someone to remind them “BOYS DON’T CRY”. On the other hand it has become symbolic that girls are born cry-babies and cannot deal with harsh situations without shedding a tear or two.

Considering the work sector, women are rising day by day in every field. There was a time when men were supposed to be doctors and women were meant to be nurses. There was a time when engineering colleges where dominated by the male section. Gender stereotypes had its own share in terms of college admissions, qualifications and job aspects.

We have women in sports bringing Olympic medals where as we have male chiefs ruling over television as judges in cookery show. The World is changing gradually. But there still seems to a section left behind in the race of coming over the gender stereotypes. The world needs to change as a whole.

Gender Sensitization is a term that refers to the modification of behavior by raising awareness of gender equality concerns. Each and every individual has sole desires, thoughts and feelings regardless of their gender.

As kids we learnt what boys and girls can or can’t do. From grown-ups who say things without proof. As kids we learn biases that seal our fate, and we grow up to be adults, realizing everything a second too late. Gender issue is not a prime women issue. It is human issue comprising both men and women. Men and women are individuals, they are more than just male or female. Our gender is only a part of who we are. It does not define us as a person. Gender cannot be considered as a parameter to judge someone’s skills as person.

The world does not need to be defined as a ‘Man’s World’ or a ‘Women’s World’. The world today needs Gender Sensitization in order to guide people towards the positive part. No one gender deserves more rights than the other one. Equal rights should be the motto that will gradually be the path to a better and brighter future.
"}]
The gentle rustle in the leaves just before a little grasshopper jumps out, the smell of sea salt on approaching the ocean, the fresh smell of grass when you roll down a hillock, the happy chirping of a little sparrow, the bright colours on butterfly wings and a plump little caterpillar plodding along. These are some of the many, uncountable examples of perfection that nature offers. Each snowflake is an intricate arrangement of molecules and atoms of aligned energy, personifying perfection. So is the piece of smelly animal feces near a garbage dump. To underplay the fact that all these are perfect, just the way they are, would be to belittle the creator. Why then, do we underrate ourselves and claim to be imperfect? 'One is what he or she chooses to be, which is the most perfect image conceivable by that being, in that space-time continuum'. One is always free to choose differently, if there happens to be a shift in the idea of what perfection is. However, all stages and forms of existence are specimen of absolute perfection. If this fact was understood by society today, contentment would have been the norm.

Although many may not take the statement of choice-and-being seriously at first, in due course, the metaphysical concept that it is based on, will be uncovered in subtle, subconsciousness and you will be one with nature, whole, and sublime.

P.S.: This is my personal perspective. I have had the privilege of exposure to an insight into such subjects in various ways, over the years, and one major contributor has been the book 'Conversations With God' by Neale Donald Walsch to whom I am eternally grateful.
"}]
When I moved to Ranchi, the question of being queer still haunted me. I knew that the umbrella of heterosexuality had long lost its appeal for me, and to some extent I was queer, even if I was not out yet. However, I was moving into a city, which seemed like a poster child of regressive politics. As I did my customary prayer at the Hanuman temple at the station, the my identity came into question. Surely, Ranchi would not mirror the acceptance I had received in the corners of Kolkata? Surely, the village I was moving to would not have as many supporters?

Now, I have spent a good three years in a lazy nook of a village in here. Formed bonds, loved people, fallen for countless seniors, joked about life, and been proven wrong every step of the way. I have censured myself some times, yes, but, there is a liberating fact that my queerness is no longer something hidden. My classmates and most of the university know about it, and they accept it, albeit with reservations. Some days, it is a discussion point, we sit and discuss about my love life, about who I like. They appreciate the men I date back at home, and then we go back to discourses about the old DNA structures and how to represent carbohydrates in Fischer projections. Perhaps, this is one of the things we all face at some point of our lives, the foreign places we visit hold keys of suspicion and fear. We wonder about how the new people would perceive us, how their politics would intermingle with ours. Their education being different, their upbringing being different, are factors weighing down upon us, and some days its necessary. I cannot walk out in front of some people and lay a claim to my identity because of fear. Yet, for most people it's normal, a part of my life they do not wish to change, and that's huge.

Safe spaces might be halfway-mythical, and some people would make you vulnerable and scared all the time. Foreign spaces scare me still, and my internships are filled with me trying to hide identities in order to be acceptable. But, some times, even in the most unlikely of places, over a half-burnt cigarette, you can discuss about the things you so furiously hide at home. And that for me is the essence of finding familiarity in a foreign space, finding a home in a space which seems to be far from it.And despite all it's foreign-ness, and the fact that my village reminds one of one of those spaces you'd find in the travelogues of a trekker, I find solace, I find allies. There is is a bit of queer to be found in the place which seems so un-queer from the get go. But, maybe, that why I relate to it so much. Foreign places are queer to us too.

Ranchi accepts my queerness, and you should know that no matter where you are, you will find confidantes who'll accept yours.
"}]

Costly restaurants, classy people and a perfect meal. Those days are gone, after the start of a new trend in India - 'Street Food'. For a middle class group, with a bunch of friends to spend a perfect evening, street food has become the perfect choice. The world suicide prevention day passed a few months back followed by the world mental health day and both the topics trended on social media with an overwhelming number of people showing their support towards the people suffering from anxiety, depression and other mental disorders. It’s great to see millions of people coming forward to show their support and sympathies and smashing the belief that mental disorders are a taboo and need to be kept in covers if one suffers from them.

Sad part to the scenario is that even though numerous people are willing to support and promote mental well-being among people, there is not much awareness about what one could do (apart from making tweets) to support the ones around them who might be suffering mentally.
No one can tell you about the life with depression and other mental illnesses better than people who are actually going through it.

Here’s a few things that anyone suffering from depression or anxiety and other mental disorders would want people around them to know, just because you cannot see it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Depression is as chronic a physical illness as any other but the symptoms are invisible to anyone apart from the one who feels them. It is an antagonizing feeling to live in this constant state of frustration where no one really sees that suffering till they’re told of it.

Depression and anxiety make a person more sensitive of other’s behavior towards them and it is when one is depressed that their loved ones start trying to distance themselves and try being lesser around the person suffering from depression because no one wants to be subjected to their negativity and frequent breakdowns. This just intensifies the suffering to the extent that loneliness at worst can lead to death.

The fact that one has to take anti-depressant pills can be a major source of embarrassment for them and they will be reluctant to talk about it even if they want to unwind themselves by sharing their experiences with others because they would rather bottle up in themselves than being judged. It’s high time that we de-stigmatize mental disorders and talk about mental health and make people feel comfortable in talking about all the mental turbulence they face.

The little anyone could do for them is understanding that depression doesn’t just mean sadness and not shaming them for being a negative influence because little of it is in the hands of the one who suffers from it. Constant state of hopelessness can be exhausting for anyone even a little love could prove to be a substantial element of change in their lives. It takes a lot of patience to support someone emotionally especially when they’re having a difficult time but they deserve your compassion and companionship as well. All we need is a little more awareness and all you need to do is, talk.
