8th March 2018, International women's day, the day on which women all over the world are showered upon with whatsapp message forwards, wishing them a "Happy women's day". But this time let's do something different, I've got something for all the gentlemen instead, something that they've always wanted to know, something that every woman always wanted to tell. So without any further tedious description, I dedicate this poem to all the men with love.

Cheesy fake vows will never win her heart,
Unlike the others, this girl is smart.

Roses and chocolates aren't what she craves,
it is loyalty throughout the journey to the graves.

She might smile when you admire her curves,
But trust me, it is reverence that she deserves.

You need not protect her day and night,
just be her strength and watch her fight.

Boundaries and restrictions just aren't her things
Let her fly with freedom as her wings.

MSE Wall 2018

Are you aware of the Earth retaining wall which resists by soil itself? Over the past three decades, Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) retaining walls have been increasingly used as design alternatives to traditional reinforced concrete retaining walls for supporting earth fills in civil infrastructure projects. MSE is soil constructed with artificial reinforcing. MSE walls stabilize unstable slopes and retain the soil on steep slopes and under crest loads. The wall face is often of precast, segmental blocks, panels or geocell that can tolerate some differential movement. The walls are infilled with granular soil, with or without reinforcement, while retaining the backfill soil. Reinforced walls utilize horizontal layers typically of geogrid. In many types of MSE’s, each vertical fascia row is inset, thereby providing individual cells that can be infilled with topsoil and planted with vegetation to create a green wall.

This year AAKAAR brings you a challenge where you get to design efficiently with less economic MSE wall. It provides a great opportunity for students to come up with an innovative solution to the crisis that our era is facing. The objective of our competition is to promote the study of geotechnical engineering among students.

It speaks volumes about our culture and traditions when there isn't a single woman that I know, including myself, who has not been groped on Holi.

Oh and I should warn you, if your sensibilities are easily hurt by the truth or hearing women speak about their issues, I suggest you stop reading this article right now.

But, moving on, women have naturally been forced to take protective measures over the years thanks to the the wonderful men in our lives. Now that we are in 2018 and we still have to hilariously sad articles like these - and yes I'm coining the term hilariously sad because that's exactly what this is, in a country where we are allegedly worshiped, women also find themselves groped nearly every day and Holi is just an excuse for all the creeps to come crawling out of the woodwork.

If you think I'm being overdramatic, there's a recent case where someone in Delhi filled a water balloon with semen and threw it at a girl who is currently traumatised and refuses to talk to people. Yes, semen.

Whoever did it was probably so starved for sex that he orgasmed into a water balloon. And nobody is even going to hold him responsible for this because whoever did it can feign ignorance and the man will get away, once again.

So anyway, coming back to the point, since a vast majority of this country still has trouble understanding consent and go on to touch your body wherever they please even when they say no, here's five tips for you to keep in mind to celebrate a safe holi as a woman.

1. Go out only with a group of friends that you trust:

It doesn't help that a large number of victims often know their assaulters, but traveling with a large group that you trust around Holi spots in your city is better than going solo and get locked in with strange men. Don't forget to look out for each other at all times.

2. Put oil or moisturiser...before you go out:

This is a festival of colours after all. Once you are sure you are with a safe group, protect your skin and hair with copious amounts of oil and moisturiser so it is easier to wash off once you're done. Just because it was Holi the day before doesn't mean you can't look fly as frack.

3. Don't go too far from your house:

Listen, honey, I don't care if your best friend's boyfriend has a killer party on the other side of town, don't go too far from house. In fact, be within running distance of your house, or at least 10 minutes by a bike. This is not just for safety but also in case of emergencies where you have to make a quick exit.

4. Say No. Scream if you have to:

Ah yes, the inevitable queue of thirsty boys that'll form up to put gulaal on your face. You know whom to trust and whom not to trust, if you have a bad feeling about someone, say a firm no. If they violate your consent by saying 'Bura na Mano', scream. Scream your lungs out until people can see what the creep is up to.

Luckily, there are still good men who respect consent. I hope.

5. Remember to enjoy yourself:

Patriarchy won't be defeated in a single day but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy yourself. While we may never be able to let loose like the boys do in this life time, that doesn't mean we cannot have fun and enjoy ourselves in our limited experience in a safe space where nobody is around to violate your consent. The important part to remember is that you can enjoy the festival as much as the boys do, so cover your hair and go wild.

Happy Holi!

The future is now and the future belongs to us, those who do not care for societal expectations and forge their own path. So if you've always wanted to make movies and want inspiration, chances are you don't really need this list because you've already watched all these movies. But, on the off chance you're one of the rare cinephile that is just discovering the medium, I've got some recommendations for you.

1. The Star Wars Saga:

Including the prequels.

No, I'm being serious.

The Star Wars Saga is a monumental achievement in filmmaking not just because of its special effects - I shall get to that in a moment - but because this the most successful movie series that is not based on a novel or a series of books. It changed the landscape of film the world over, made sci-fi cool and turned millions into fans. It was a fantastic achievement in special effects with its lightsabers and space dog fights which were insane to shoot. If you are an aspiring filmmaker, read everything there is to read about the making of Star Wars. This movie is also an achievement in editing, in fact the entire movie was saved by the editing team. That is an interesting story in itself.

Seriously, go read everything about how Star Wars was made.

2. Psycho, Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, 1960:

Now, I'm not a big fan of Hitchcock as a person, considering his history of abuse against Tippi Harden, who was a star in Hitchcock's Birds. Hitchcock's obsession with Harden turned to cruelty when she rejected his advances and at one point, the harassment got so cruel that she had to leave the movie she was working on with him. Since this was back in the 60s and the fact that she was a woman, nobody would listen to her and her career was basically dead.

Never meet your heroes.

Despite the fact, however, Hitchcock was still a brilliant filmmaker. With Psycho, he broke industry conventions and gave birth to the modern suspense filled thriller genre. Psycho itself is a classic and regularly recommended by film buffs around the world. He remains an example to directors to not be afraid to break genre and medium conventions. That being said, don't sexually abuse women. I still have to spell this out in 2018.

3. Reservoir Dogs, Directed by Quentin Tarantino. 1992

Although I personally prefer Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs was Tarantino's debut to the industry and also broke genre rules and conventions in moving away from the traditional three act structure of a movie and making a very unique narrative that he perfected with Pulp Fiction. He also believes in the idea of faking it until you make it; he claimed to have a part in King Lear and Dawn of the Dead. Even though he had nothing to do with these movies. But they still looked great on his resume to the producers who were too lazy to look into it.

Although now he doesn't really have to depend on that anymore, of course.

4. Citizen Kane, Directed by Orson Welles:

Not only is Citizen Kane a great movie, it relied on a great director who mastered the art of storytelling in general, and was able to apply it to many mediums. Orson Welles is also well known for the 1938 radio show The War of the Worlds, which put the radio show’s audience in a panic when they misinterpreted the sci-fi drama as a nonfiction news story. Despite the movie’s genius, it was not until the 2000’s that it was actually accepted by the film industry at large as an influential piece. In fact, it was a commercial failure when it first hit cinemas because William Randolph Hearst, the person the protagonist of the film was based off of, did his very best to prevent the movie from being widely publicised. Welles was never again given the commercial freedom that he was given with Citizen Kane because of the lack of funds that the movie was able to raise.

The lesson here is that one needs to not be afraid if the movie they're making will be received poorly or not and more importantly, one has to be bold enough to take the massive risk Welles took. For the sake of art and passion.

5. The Shawshank Redemption, Directed by Frank Darabont. 1994

Another movie that was not received well at launch, the movie gained popularity as the message of the movie sunk in for audiences. There are also unique character relations in the movie; some call it a “guy-cry” movie. The characters are very well developed and used. Writer-director Frank Darabont had no career as a director before Shawshank. He worked on the set of low-budget films in order to pay rent.

The lesson here is that you need to be patient and persevere in this industry that eats up so many who want to get rich and famous really quick. Darabont spent 7 years writing and perfecting his script while also taking inputs from industry giants and prominent writers like Stephen King before he put the script out and started casting. Tim Robbins, who plays the protagonist of the movie, said it was the best script he has ever read in his life.

The terms heart attack and sudden cardiac arrest are often used interchangeably, even in the media. But these two conditions are NOT the same.

What is the difference between a heart attack and a cardiac arrest?

Simply put, a heart attack is a ‘plumbing’ or circulation problem.

A cardiac arrest is an ‘electrical’ problem.

txt
rich_1519801196133

HEART ATTACK

The human heart has various blood vessels connecting to it.Overtime, cholesterol and a fatty material (called plaque) can build up on the walls inside blood vessels that take blood to your heart, (arteries). This makes it harder for blood to flow freely. Most heart attacks happen when a piece of this plaque breaks off. A blood clot forms around the broken-off plaque, and it blocks the artery. As a result, a small section of the heart does not get enough oxygenated blood. If the blocked artery is not reopened quickly, the part of the heart normally nourished by that artery begins to die. The longer a person goes without treatment, the greater the damage.

When do you know this happens?

In the case of a heart attack, the symptoms may appear hours or days after the problem develops. You may feel intense chest pains and discomfort in the upper body. There may be shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting or cold sweats. The symptoms can be different for men and women, such as stomach pain, back ache, fatigue or jaw pain can be expected for women when having a heart attack.

What should you do if this happens?

The first thing you do is call an Ambulance, do not go to the hospital in a car since an Ambulance is properly equipped, they can perform emergency procedures in the ambulance itself.

While the ambulance arrives, chew and swallow an aspirin(unless allergic). If someone can perform a CPR, do it carefully.Do not panic, as the more you panic, the more frequently your heart tries to pump blood through the blocked blood vessel.

txt
rich_1519802336572

CARDIAC ARREST

In a cardiac arrest the heart actually stops beating; whereas in a heart attack the heart normally continues to beat even though the blood supply to the heart is disrupted.

Sudden cardiac arrest can occur without warning. It’s triggered by an electrical problem in the heart that causes an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia). With its pumping action disrupted, the heart cannot send blood to the brain, lungs and other organs. Seconds later, a person loses consciousness and has no pulse.
