Look, I get it, Mondays suck, Tuesdays are even worse, Wednesdays are the worst. It is right in the middle of the week, the weekend is as far away as the last time you had some fun, which was the last weekend. If you have any video games, movies or TV shows coming out, you'll have to wait till Friday, which is one full extra day in between. Wednesdays, then, become the worst part of the week in a week you're already detesting because you have things to do because otherwise you will not survive.

Sounds like you? It sure does sound like me. I'll be honest, with Wolfenstien II: The New Colossus, Stranger Things and Assassin's Creed: Origins all releasing on the same day, it has got me excited but it is still one full day away and that is so incredibly annoying, I cannot even begin to tell you how much I wish I could put myself to sleep and wake up automatically on time, you know, like how they do it in Fallout and Skyrim, and also Witcher. But since that is in-game and fictional, we're stuck with the reality of our situation: having to deal with your own animosity towards the week you're going through.

As fancy as it is to hope that we had super powers or could sleep forever, it is up to us to turn our week from Kryptonite to something that energises us. It also dramatically improves your performance at work or in college. So how does one do it?

1. Plan your week every Sunday evening:

No, this is not a joke, I'm being quite serious. Instead of sulking around the house and cursing the inevitable onslaught of Monday on all your free time, sit down, grab a pen and paper (or use Evernote, that is a great option) and plan your week starting Monday morning. Make sure you give yourself appropriate time to unwind and promise to yourself that you will stay focused and finish tasks according to your planner. Which brings us to point number 2.

2. Focus on what is important:

No, that funny edgy meme you just got on WhatsApp doesn't need your immediate attention, neither do you need to look at it and laugh before you type 'nice meme'. When you're at your workplace or your college, focus on the task at hand even if its killing your brain cells with the tremendous amount of soporific powers it just developed. In this day and age of internet and social media, our attention spans have been reduced to ridiculous amounts. There is an entire generation of children growing up with attention spans so horrendous, I fear they'll ever pick up a book to read, but that is a problem for another time. For now, keep your focus, it may become a privilege tomorrow.

3. Sweat a bit:

Don't be just confined to a small cubicle or a class room, wake up early, go for a run, cycle, hit the gym, make the right choices. The amount of positive impact a routine like this can have on your week and by extension your entire life is heavily underreported. A daily morning (or evening if you're a gym rat and are trying to bulk up) workout routine can tremendously improve any week you're having. Personally attest to that fact.

4. Do something positive:

Read about social classes, understand social issues, support the right causes, lend a helping hand to those who need help, even when you get nothing in return. Expect nothing from anyone else but be willing to lend a hand when needed. Be excellent to the people around you, it will help.

5. Be The Change you want to see:

Rome was certainly not built in a day, first there was Romulus and the whole wolf thing, that was a great story. But I'm going off track, the point here is that you can start not hating your week by starting to change how you see life itself. I know you can love your life and hate yourself, which leads to even more negativity, but the power to change this is in your hands, and I believe in you.

Go get em!

Writing novels is not an easy task, in fact, I'd go on to say even the basic act of writing itself is more difficult than it seems to be, difficulty that we often take for granted because most of us will not be writing as many words as someone like Orhan Pamuk - who won a Nobel in Literature - would be. Most people, then, are left to the devices of wordsmiths who manage to craft the words we know into prose we will remember.

Pamuk's 'My Name Is Red' was a book I pretended I had read for a long time, no idea why I did that. Maybe I was seeking approval and inclusion in the 'cool' group that read as many books as I do, and in many cases - to be fair, in all cases - read more than me. The natural tendency to lean towards over-expectations when you hear so much praise of a book coming from people you trust makes you, I fear, think that the book they were recommending is not as good as they claim it to be. It is kind of hard to take people seriously when everyone comes up to you and says a particular show or book they were watching/reading at the moment was the best thing since sliced bread. But it wasn't, and Pamuk's flourish in writing earned him a fan in me.

Which brings us to the main event time, the question at hand, the billion dollar question (or really, a few hundred rupees, since that is how much the book costs) is if the book is worth picking up or not.

Of course, it is.

That was always going to be the answer to 'Should I read Pamuk?', yes, you should, and yes, you should talk about it as much as you can.

The Red-Haired Woman is Pamuk's 10th novel, released earlier this year. A short novel that takes you through its pages filled with a young 16-year-old and a grizzled old man, scarred over the years with wounds on both the soul and its vessel - going through the trials and tribulations of building a friendship. Of sorts.

With a father that was more devoted to the ideology than his own son, Cem found himself without a father figure at the age he needed one the most. As is wont for any teenager his age - the desire to be independent for example - Cem seeks work and finds the grizzled old Mahmut, in-charge of digging a well for the local residents in the nearby town, and joins as an apprentice.

Manual labour is hard work, building a well even more so. As Cem and Mahmut would continue to find out, it was also a great tool in bringing them together, with Cem seeing the old man as his surrogate father, and it is with this surrogate father - on one of his breaks - he sees The Red-Haired Woman for the very first time.

Pamuk's style has always evoked strong emotions in me. The narrative shifts focus to the interactions between Cem and the people he meets, thoughts about the Red-Haired Woman and it is done so in Pamuk's signature style, that ethereal play of words that come together and leave you breathing shallow and starting at what you just read. While My Name Is Red was absolutely incredible in breaking out the emotions and burdening you with them, The Red-Haired Woman is slower, with bits and pieces of brilliance thrown around across its pages, but it is truly near the end where the book shines.

Pamuk's use of narrative tropes over the course of the book and then bringing it all together at the end with a neat little twist of its own is a pleasure to read. My complaint, perhaps my only one with this book, is that the final twist and the narrative that follows it seems like it was crafted first before anything else was written because the final few pages are simply sublime.

They say a good movie is one that changes you as a person, but I believe books have a greater impact. Throughout history, great folk have learned a lot from books, some people even went on to write their own and become legends in their own right. The Red-Haired Woman is not Pamuk's best work, but it is still a fantastic read, and you should definitely pick it up.

In June 2017, India and China locked their horns over a disputed territory in a remote part of
the Himalayas. In the last few days, #metoo is trending a lot on social media, with many women openly talking about their experiences of being sexually harassed. This is a first, in terms of so many women -especially Indian women- bluntly talking about being harassed and considering the societal perspectives of victim blaming when it comes to sexual harassment. In this context, stuMagz decided to catch up with Swati Lakra, Additional Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad and we spoke to her about her initiative - She Team, that aims to curb sexual harassment in all aspects, in all forms, at all places, providing safety and security to women in the society.

txt
rich_1508580412613

Considering that stuMagz caters to students, for their benefit, we asked her about how She Team functions and to that she said, "She Team works in two ways. One is that we catch people red handed, with a lot of our personnel in mufti in the areas that we identified as hotspots for sexual harassment in the city. They go on field with cameras and record the perpetrators in act before arresting them. We ensure a 100% conviction rate by having solid evidence before we make a move. And because women don't file complaints most of the time, we take up the cases Suo Moto. As these usually are registered as petty cases, we also call the perpetrators' families as we realised shaming the perpetrators has a major impact. We call the wife/mother/father/sister, etc of the person and we clearly inform them as to what the person has done.

Another way She Team works is through complaints. We have a WhatsApp number, we have a mobile app, various social media platforms, email and more. We ensure there is a very quick response."

An interesting point that we found out through the conversation was that they register cases and take action but they do so only after due enquiry to ensure there is no misuse of these laws. "We don't want someone to just file a fake case and get someone convicted for revenge or something and that is why we do thorough enquiry," she explains.

She Team also has a very different approach towards the victims, as compared to the previous scenario, as Swati informs, "We ensure that the victims are treated properly and are not further victimised. Every person in our team is sensitised well to ensure the victims are comfortable," before adding, "So far, based on independent surveys by various media houses and NGOs, and based on the response that we've gotten, I can say that Hyderabad is safer for women when compared to other cities." Also, according to her, any person can just walk in to the She Team office located at Haca Bhavan and register a complaint. "While Police Stations now are very citizen friendly, She Team are not located in Police Stations. Any victim -regardless of age- can just walk in and file a complaint as we have highly trained people and considering the fact that most of the people who work with She Team are men, we take great care in sensitising them and training them. They know how to talk, what to talk and what not to talk. In fact, we encourage our own team members to talk to women in their families about their personal experiences of being sexually harassed. This gives these men a better understanding of what a woman goes through when she is harassed" she explains.

txt
rich_1508581564052

In addition to taking legal action on perpetrators, She Team also actively conducts campaigns and workshops for college students. "We conduct a lot of awareness activities on eve teasing, sexual harassment and more. We also conduct workshops on self defence, workshops on how to avoid becoming victims of cyber crime and general safety in colleges," Ms. Swati explains, adding, "We realised one doesn't need to be a black belt in Karate or something to be able to defend herself. We tied up with a self defence academy and came up with a small booklet of 10 simple techniques that will help a girl get out of a situation. We are now in the process of distributing it to students all over."

txt
rich_1508581788956

We at stuMagz, urge every girl, woman, to speak out against sexual harassment and boldly take steps towards fighting it. We also applaud Swati Lakra for this wonderful initiative and hope she succeeds in making Hyderabad the safest city.
"}]

Let me be clear about one thing, Bose has ruined every other headphone or earphones brand out there for me with a few notable exceptions, like the Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro or a few offerings from the Sennheiser stable, but that is a story for another time. Today, we review the Sony MDR-XB55 In-Ear Earphones, widely available - for some unfathomable reason - across many an electronics store across the city. So if you ever wanted to pick up a pair without ordering online, simply walk into your nearest Reliance Digital.

These particular pairs of earphones, also known as Extra bass for their trademark extra base which packs quite a powerful punch even with its relatively small size, are also quite popular due to their ease of availability, but I've never actually tested them to see how they fair in a fair test. So I spent a couple of days with a pair, including taking it for my morning walk and then using it at work, the following are my very short but concise thoughts on a pair of the MDR XB55s

Let's begin by talking about the build quality. While there is a certain amount of plastic feeling to the design of the earphones, on closer inspection you find that it is much sturdier than it looks and can withstand a lot of punishment, which makes it ideal to use in the gym should you decide to do so. The connecting wire that finishes with a shiny and tipped 3.5mm jack is not braided or sufficiently protected, however, and feels quite flimsy.

The sound quality itself is decent, it gets worse depending on the type of genres you prefer to listen to, it is great for anything with a fantastic bass line in it. which brings us to the main event, the bass itself.

I do not know which genius it was to suggest to earphone companies that everyone was into bass these days, was this the result of their extensive market analysis and research where they saw kids today listening to EDM only. Whatever the case, the result of them putting 'extra bass' on the advertisement and cover seems to have worked with people flocking to buy the thing in the first place, but how confident does the resistance feel?

For all their show and bravado, the bass is pretty decent and the clears are clear enough to hear the lyrics being sung quite clearly. The base is not great, but it gets the job done. You won't be disturbed in public areas, that is for sure.

Overall, Sony MDR-XB55 is a great pair of earphones that manages to be well rounded while not feeling cheap. Buying this on sale is the smartest thing you can do, but after that, it is open season. There are better earph0nes to get at higher prices if you decided to buy this anyway at its original price of 2.1 thousand change, so wait for a sale.

In conclusion, I'd say make this your starting piece in a collection worthy of making everyone jealous. Click here to buy!
"}]
I'm ashamed to say that I didn't know who Nain Singh Rawat was until today, when Google made a doodle in his honour and put it on their homepage.

Nain Singh Rawat was an Indian explorer born in the 19th century, on this day, October 21, 1830. He would grow up in the foothills of the Himalayas, looking up at the mountains and making friends in the area until one day, when he was 25 years old he would be contracted by German Explorers to map and explore much of the Himalayas, both the foothills and the greater Himalayas above them.

And explore he did, Rawat is credited with mapping the trade routes between India and Tibet, much of the course of the Brahmaputra, as well as accurately mapping and discovering the co-ordinates of Lhasa, which remains the second most populous city in Tibet to this day.

Rawat became good friends with the Tibetans, which in turn allowed him access to their resources and help for when he decided that the mountains were his calling. After working for the two German cartographers at the age of 25, Rawat went on to undertake many more cartography missions for the British government, braving the unforgiving snows, heights and air the greater Himalayas.

I should add, there are no amount of pictures or descriptions that you can see or read to tell you just simply how magnificent the Himalayas are. One has to see it with their own two eyes, one has to be humbled in the face of sheer awe. There are no amount of pictures that will prepare you to see the Himalayas for the very first time, it is one of those very few things in life that will leave you completely awestruck when you actually see it for yourself.

And in mountains like these, men like Rawat ran around as if it was their business to map every inch of the mountain ranges. Rawat himself braved insane weather conditions, mortal peril and things worse than death just because he loved the mountains. That is something very inspiring.
