Group Discussions are invariably a part of selection process of many top colleges in India and many MNCs. It is a test for a candidate's interpersonal skills and group dynamics, unfortunately many candidates are eliminated in this round not because they lack the required potential but are ignorant of simple and basic rules one needs to religiously obey to nail a group discussion. So here is quick look at what can get you into your dream college or job.

txt
rich_1487584022996

1. Preparation:

After giving the topic for group discussion, you will have around 3 minutes time to prepare which is of crucial importance for every one. This is the time when you generate ideas for the given topic. Make sure you write down points in such a way that you can elaborate on a point looking at a keyword, remember do not read out from the paper, keep it as natural as possible. You would be given most points for the content.

txt
rich_1487585257917

2. Analyse the topic:

Topics given to you could be opinion based, fact based or abstract topics. Opinion based topics are easier because all you have to do is justify your stand and when it come to fact based, be careful of the figures and facts that you pitch. There is no dearth of points when it comes to these two kind of topics. 'Green is better than blue' or 'Pigs can fly' - topics like these are called abstract topics where you need to relate things and generate ideas. Green you could relate to forest cover and blue to marine life and further establish a relevance as to why it is more important to protect the green cover than water. There is no boundary for your imagination here but make sure you do not fail to establish a relevance and make sensible points.

txt
rich_1487584052821

3. Initiate the GD:

The person who initiates the group discussion has the maximum advantage because for around 20 seconds no one will intervene and you would have the opportunity to give a lead in the discussion and make maximum points. But remember do not give out all the points in the beginning and stay silent for the rest 10 minutes, continue to make interventions.

txt
rich_1487584090550

4. Be attentive and spontaneous:

Simply putting down your points on paper and waiting for a chance to speak, not being attentive to what others have tell - is of no good. Be attentive and respond, either counter their point or build up on the point, be spontaneous and quick enough to pull it off from other interesting points, this would fetch you more points than you would otherwise by pitching in your own ideas or opinions.

txt
rich_1487584131452

5. Do not make many interventions:

On an average making five to seven interventions is healthy and more than seven would fetch you a negative impression because you would be labelled as someone who talks more. Be generous and let others speak, you gain points for your group behavior because a group discussion is different from a debate, the primary purpose is not to prove your point but reach a sensible and impactful conclusion.

txt
rich_1487584165737

6. Be assertive not arrogant:

There is a very thin line between being arrogant and being assertive in a group discussion. It is important to be confident and loud when you speak but when you try to cut other people abruptly, point out their mistakes, humiliate someone, you lose points there. Your tone or voice should be loud and clear but do not lose your calm. Don't get inspired by Arnab Goswami.

txt
rich_1487584260897

7. Body language:

Maintaining eye contact with every one is very important, remember it is a group discussion. Your body language will also fetch you points, use gestures while you speak but be careful when you use pens, make sure you do not point at a specific person, you have to address the entire group.

txt
rich_1487584273297

8. Speak clearly:

In a group discussion it is important to be loud and clear so that the panel or the moderator can clearly listen to your points. People will try to cut you off in a group discussion but keep trying to intervene do not just give up, the moderator will at least observe that you were trying to actively participate. That is where you perseverance is put to test.

txt
rich_1487584315068

9. Let others speak:

In a GD you have to let others speak as well. You have to be compassionate and generous and let others put forward there points as well. But it is also important to make sure you are not into social service; don't let everyone cut you off while you speak and do not be anyone's spokesperson in the discussion.

txt
rich_1487584329057

10. Give the discussion a direction:

Specially when you initiate the GD, the responsibility is on you to give the discussion a right path. Many times ideas and points get digressive, then one has to try to channelize the discussion to reach a meaningful conclusion.
"}]
When the first rays of the morning sun hit my face,

You want me to wake up and be ahead in the race.

Poor you! Trying so hard to douse me with water

And trying to send me to the everyday slaughter.

You seem naïve sometimes,

Yet so mature when giving me advice for a lifetime.

You pester me to go for that morning jog,

And complain how I have become a lazy log.

You stealthily loosen the hem of my dress

When I gain weight in excess.

All day you say, get up you lazy bones,

Move about or under your burgeoning weight you’ll moan!

Yet, an extra dollop of ice cream I find in my bowl

Even if without a reason I have a scowl.

Who will marry such a girl, you cry?

Oh wait, do you have a ‘ahem’ boyfriend? You try to pry!

When I get sick, you have my phone to blame

When I flunk, my phone is to blame

When I get depressed, my phone is to blame

With such escalating taunts,My phone may soon go red with shame.

You spend sleepless nights praying that I ace the class

And when I don’t, you motivate me by saying, ‘this too shall pass’.

You cater to my needs by relegating yours to the background

But when I watch k dramas Instead of those tutorials on JAVA,

On me you will initiate a crackdown.

You toil so hard to teach me values

So that I can be a person of good use.

My way of cussing you shun,

And as always, you remark- oh hon!

Who will marry such a one?

Also, you help me shape my career

While trying so hard that I do not get arrear.

In a family of doctorates, I seem to be the black sheep

But thankfully, you have never contemplated dumping me in a garbage heap.

Mother oh mother, with your magnitude of love,

I fly up, up and above.
"}]
Big Yellow Door or BYD as it is popularly known is literally a quirky crooked yellow door that leads you into this café that smells deliciously of herbs and warm coffee. This asymmetrical yellow door has become the statement landmark of the Satya Niketan area and with its warm interiors (and great food, ofcourse) the café is a perfect place for a Saturday brunch or an evening date.
As soon as you enter, you’re welcomed by this warm fuzzy feeling of the dimly lit place. Fairy lights and lanterns complement the subdued interiors.

There’s low comfortable seating area with the prettiest of cushions along with the classic café seating with small wooden top tables and rustic green chairs.
The country interiors are complemented by stone walls as partitions with a signature wall at the end adding a dash of color and an edge.

Beautiful painted pebbles bestrew the end wall along with old books and woodwork giving the entire place a fun vibe and color.
A pale wall decorated with simple but beautiful graffiti of a windowpane, is like a perfect corner for pictures with beautiful overhead lighting and the graffiti in the background. The flowers hanging at every little distance along with lanterns from the ceiling give the place an elegant look and fresh aura.
Decorated with beautiful and simplistic DIY accessories like paper lamps and lanterns, the café emanates homely vibes (which is complemented by the delicious homecooked style food!) With the wooden ceiling, stone walls and dim and peaceful lights, Big Yellow Door can totally pass off as a café located at some peaceful hillside rather than the hustle bustle of the crowded city.
Big yellow door is the café if you want to take a break from the noisy city and have a meal with good music (They’ve a great playlist!) and a tranquil and beautifully done place.

(My little piece of advice - Anyone at Delhi must check this place out for some delicious baked mac and cheese!)
"}]

Milind Soman is 51 years old, and that fact shocks us every time we hear it. Born to a Marathi family in Glasgow, Scotland, Soman comes from a long line of accomplished doctors and scientists, and he himself has a diploma in Electrical Engineering. However, we today know him as a fitness icon and a model par excellence, who to this day at his age keeps inspiring people to take up fitness lifestyle and make people swoon. Here's some things every student should know about him.

1. He chased his dream.

Moving to India at a tender age of 7 with his family and living in Dadar is a sensory overload for someone used to living in a country like Scotland, but Soman pulled through. His family, grandparents who were all doctors (yes all 4 of them), father who was a nuclear scientist and mother who was a professor in a reputed college, all were examples of academic excellence, and Soman himself went on to get his diploma in Electrical Engineering. But he knew that this is not what he wanted to do, and so, he became a model in 1988.

*Student is busily checking something on a cellphone in a corridor in college*

*Faculty member walks by*

*Student gets a rush of adrenalin and hides the phone*

If you can relate to this, then we're sure you're in one of the many engineering colleges in the city and the fact that mobile phones are not allowed in colleges, is well known and much debated upon. Though most colleges don't adhere to the rule strictly and most faculty members turn a blind eye towards students using their mobile phones on campus, there are some colleges which stick to this rule firmly and even go to the extent of confiscating students' phones. There were also instances when the state government itself, decided to impose a ban on mobile phones in educational institutions.

But what about the fact that most students who study in engineering colleges are somehow linked to app development and need mobile phones to work on? And what about the fact that most colleges are in far flung places outside the city and students actually need to have some mode of communication on them? Besides these necessities, mobiles now play a crucial role in students' lives as most of the class related info is shared on whatsapp groups and students save lessons and notes on mobiles.

Having previously done a similar story wherein I spoke to several students after their phones were confiscated in colleges, most students lamented about the fact that they had to build apps and attend app building workshops in colleges and yet, they couldn't bring phones to colleges. They also lamented about the fact that some members of the faculty who confiscated their phones, didn't respect their privacy and went through their contacts, texts and galleries.

But the colleges themselves had another angle to talk about. Considering the number of MMS scandals, exam-cheating scandals, etc that happened because students had phones on campuses; not to mention the countless number of times when students use phones in class, the colleges feel imposing a ban on the usage of phones in college is a right thing.

What I feel is that the onus lies on the students' sense of discipline when it comes to having a cellphone with them in college. I will not claim to have been the perfect student when I was in college, I took a phone to college and in fact, I had a phone right from when I was in my 10th; but I can firmly say with conviction that I had the basic sense to not use it while a class was going on or some such. Like that cliched line - with great power comes great responsibilty, students should have the basic sense to not use phones in classes and also to not perform any unwarranted acts with it.

It's the same with any other aspect of college life, over which rules are imposed upon. There are several colleges (though the comparable number is low) which have an open-gate system and several colleges that once had an open-gate system and many colleges (this number being the maximum), with a closed gate system. It's usually the top colleges like IITs and other central universities that have a complete open-gate system because the college management completely relies on the students' sense of responsibility and discipline. The colleges that once had an open-gate system changed and imposed rules after students went out and got into accidents and things like that.

So in my opinion, if students show a sense of responsibility, the colleges themselves will stop imposing such rules.
"}]

College has so much to offer. One of the best things about college is having the freedom to make your own decisions, a trait that is beneficial for any student stepping into a world of duality. While independence comes with great responsibility and imperative insight, it gives you the opportunity to explore your interests, create a standpoint and learn valuable lessons along the way. Your personal life is as important as your professional life, so make the most out of the four years that eventually spawn the individual you become in your near future.

Many colleges urge students to involve in extra-curricular activities such as sports, clubs and events. A few common sports include basketball, softball, cricket, and football. If you aren’t interested in sports, colleges also offer various kinds of clubs such as classical music club, cooking club, art club, and many more. There are a broad range of activities you can engage yourself in to find your genuine interest. In addition, it is a great way to meet like-minded people. The social contacts you create while being in these organizations usually last for prolonged periods of your adult life.
In high school, we are restricted to follow a schedule which typically consists of back-breaking classes that force us to shove our face into our textbooks, literally. But college gives you the time to explore options. It is a time for you to go out, have fun and discover your self-worth or who you are as an individual. Learning about your passions and who you are will make the challenges that life tends to throw at the best among us worth the ride. At the end, it’s all about how prepared you are to handle the real world once you step out of those college gates.

"}]

Aayush Sharma has been a gamer for as long as he can remember, and continues to be fond of the hobby to this day. This student from the University of Texas, Arlington, along with his partners Ayush and Pulkit, run a game studio by the name of Vox Pop Games, and are hard at work developing video games.

We reached out to Aayush via email and he was kind enough to reply to the many enquirers we had. "The team consists of 3 people Me(Aayush), Ayush and Pulkit
I'm in charge of Gameplay/Animation (Stuff like combat, AI response and stuff).
My friend Ayush Bansal is incharge of Story and gameplay elements (Level design, Narration and stuff).
Last but not the least Pulkit - Newest addition to our team he is our primary designer who provides us with graphical assets and also help us out with story.I met him in comic con Delhi."

Aayush Sharma handles the gameplay and animation, on being asked about the challenges faced during making of the game, he says, "It has been nerve wracking, the most challenging part of this is designing the AI," referring to the the path and logic the in game enemies follow while playing, "I've been a major part of the reason why it's been delayed so much, because I'm also coming up with many gameplay features."

He is grateful to his team, credits his fellow teammates Ayush and Pulkit for their amazing work, "Logic programming may be tough, but coming up with a story that everyone likes is even tougher," he says, referring to Ayush Bansal, who's role is level design and narration, "and Pulkit is just amazing, if things go right, we might move from a 2D RPG to even a 3D game!"

About the game being developed, Aayush is understandably tight lipped, "All I can tell you for now is that, it's a 2D RPG with elements of butterfly effect where your choices will carry weight, and of course there are different classes to play."

"I've grown up playing video games, and when I do, I put myself in the shoes of the main character, understand their motivations, what drove them. Games like Life is Strange, Dragon Age, Max Payne and The Witcher are what drove me to design my own," he says, on his inspirations and what gaming means to him, "Luckily my parents never objected to this, there was even a time when we skipped exams to go play League of Legends in Goa!"

Game Development is an industry gaining steam in India, and it can only go up from here. We asked Aayush on what would he like to tell students who want to get into Game Development, "When it comes to Game Development, you never know until you've tried making one yourself. I thought I would finish my computer science degree and get into Game Development but that day never arrived until we spotted a game development competition on Facebook, and the rest is history."

Video Games are becoming mediums to tell fantastic stories and shows no signs of slowing down in the near future. We wish Aayush Sharma all the best with Vox Pop Games in the future.
"}]
You must have seen her videos online, you must have heard her voice on TV, Saika Beerval's melodious voice is not something one forgets easily.

This 2nd year Bachelor of Science student from Osmania University College for Women is setting social media on fire with her singing, a platform she once believed was the only way of expressing herself since she wanted to sing.

She credits her teachers, Dr. K Ramachary Komanduri and Dr. Vyzarsu Balasubrahmanyam, who teach light music and carnatic music respectively, as her biggest inspirations and influence.

From the first song she sang on social media to her current and future plans, we chat with Saika Beerval in the video below.
