Homi J. Bhabha, also known as the Father of Indian Nuclear Program, has pioneered the nuclear development in India, he has made immense contributions to nuclear physics. He was also the founding director of two eminent research institutes; Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) and the Trombay Atomic Energy Establishment. Remembering him on his death anniversary which is on 24th January, here are few things everyone needs to know about the great scientist.

txt
rich_1485166363433

1. Education and Research:

Homi J. Bhabha was a merit student right from his childhood. He did not sleep as long as other children of his age, because of his super active brain and the rapid flow of thoughts. At the age of 15, he passed the Senior Cambridge Examination. Bhabha was awarded the Salomons Studentship in Engineering. In 1932, he obtained first class on his Mathematical Tripos and was awarded the Rouse Ball traveling studentship in mathematics. He then pursued his studies in Theoretical Physics as a Research Scholar. He also worked with scientists like Rutherford, Dirac, Niels Bohr and Heitler, which has had a great impact on his research and also his personal life.

In my opinion, happiness is an overrated emotion. Contentment is more of a necessity. And when it comes to love, I prefer to experience a sense of satisfaction and gladness, that which has nothing to do with materialistic expectations. The only kind of relationships that I find fit to be bracketed in that are those of our family. Friends on the other hand, fill the voids left or blend in seamlessly with family and thus are equally important if not more. But the one kind of love that I cannot bracket or delimit is that of a dog’s. Those warm, loving eyes, those little furry paws that walk up to me even though I might not have anything to feed them but love, is where my definition of contentment comes from. I have come across various kind of people in different walks of life who share different rapports with me but the bond that remains the same irrespective of who it is, is a Dog’s.

Of course, every dog on the street generates such lovely vibes that I cannot fathom in most people, but spending a day surrounded by dogs put this natural glow on my face that comes only from experiencing bliss. In this materialistic world, I somehow lost myself to its pressure. Those unspoken, undecipherable voids filled themselves completely that I came out as a new person, with a new outlook of life. The country woke up on the morning of January 21 with news of the Jagdalpur-Bhubaneswar Express train number 18448 derailing near Kuneru, Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh. Reports say that three cars derailed with enough force to leave the tracks entirely, while some coaches crashed into an oncoming goods/freight train. 40 people lost their lives and over 200 people were injured in the mishap.

Now wait, you're probably think that you're hearing about train derailments quite often these days, and you would be right. The Kuneru crash is the third train mishap in 2 months, in November of 2016, the Patna-Indore Express derailed, causing 140 casualties and over 200 injuries, one of the deadliest train accidents in recent times. Twitter savvy railway minister Suresh Prabhu did not mention the official cause of the Patna-Indore express crash, but the term 'Rail Fracture' was picked up, a phenomenon caused due to repeated expansion and contraction of the tracks with the changing seasons, so much so that it was accepted as an official statement even when the government did not issue it.

So the question I have is, why isn't railway security and protection the top of our priority list already, and how many lives need to be sacrificed before the powers that be realize that our ancient railway network is bursting at the seams? Even one railway gangman missing his duty can be dangerous to the lives of hundreds in a passenger train, and the corruption and apathy of officials and politicians is something we've all heard stories of, making it hard to trust the government when they say railway security will be improved.

Suresh Prabhu cut short his visit to the North East and coordinated with AP Chief Minister Chandra Babu Naidu before arriving at the sit of the crash in Kuneru. News reports in international media have quoted railway workers, who wished to remain unnamed, about the number of people killed via train accidents, and the number is way above 50000 per year, which is a shame. Countries like the United States of America, and in Europe rarely depend on railway as a means of transport, since flying is becoming increasingly cheap, the number of train derailments are incredibly low because they tend to take security seriously. The last major train derailment in the United States was in 2015, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where 8 were killed.
