On just another regular morning, a bunch of about 100 students were more excited than others, yes they had a reason to be excited about! The statement "When thy voice expresses itself in public it often goes unheard, but when that voice is supported by a rumbles of "I" , thou shall be heard!" started making sense, It was the day of Street Cause VBIT Congregate!

The day we've all been longing for, the day we've all prepared ourselves for! Everyone arrived, looking the best they've in a very long time, all suited up in business formals with speeches to speak and motions to propose. Little did anyone know who the chair was going to be, it was the chair of a prestigious assembly, ready to give us a small scale experience of how it actually happens.

So it finally started, speech was given on the Women empowerment issue and people started suggesting the best they could. Some of the proposals garnered the support and votes of other delegates and the motions were passed, while the dismal ones were rejected. The house then moved on to the next 3 topics for the day, which were social impact, education and environment. Students, who were now delegates of the first ever Street Cause VBIT Congregate showed no hesitation in telling their Co-delegates and the respected chair what each of them had in their mind.

The day ended with the announcement of finalized goals which were decided based on the votes of the delegates.
"}]
Take a deep breath, try to remind yourself of the time you got done with your 10th boards, and in the midst of the longest and most satisfactory vacation of your life, you faced a simple question. “Beta CBSE karoge ya State Board?”

Funny how a simple question of such little importance, it seemed at the time, would shape a student’s entire outlook, perspective and intent towards their education, or on the larger scale, their life. Personally, this was a simple decision. I had my plan sorted out. I’d join the Narayana/Chaitanya closest to me, work my ass off and get into a good enough college. Well, let’s just say one of the three things above didn’t really go according to plan (Don’t ask me which). Things don’t always work out and you live to deal with it. But to this day I try to imagine myself in the same type of environment as my schooling in the setting of my junior college (whoever came up with that genius term).

So here’s the question that’s more interesting. Should a student go for national level education or go with the mainstream mug up sweathouse? But don’t get me wrong, there are loads of aspects where state board education can put national curriculum to shame. For example, moving from an ICSE syllabus to intermediate was drastic for me. I was not used to the sort of work ethic or the time management my peers were used to putting in. Or the comfort with which they could endure long hours of being in the same room, and still maintain a certain level of attention in the classroom. I wouldn’t say I haven’t learnt anything during my 2 years of intermediate, because I have, like so many others alongside me.

On the flip side, maybe a national schooling for 11th and 12th would’ve been an easier transition. There are drastic differences in the method of teaching as well. These schools aren’t targeted at crunching insane numbers or discriminating students based on weekly tests. Rather, their curriculum is based on the principle that a student should learn first rather than get better grades. Evidence for this is in the pattern of examinations for example. State boards have a very predictable or crackable set of questions which repeat in the final examinations. Something that is partly uncommon in national tests.

Coming to the teachers or the management involved in these biospheres. There is, I must say, a huge yuge gap in the methods or the professionalism of the two circles of educators. Stating the very crude nature of management at private institutions like Narayana or Chaitanya. These people have adopted a stance of tough love, if you can call it love that is, for their students. They emphasize on hard work till the breaking point and then half a mile past it. Anyone why does not live up to their set standards of marking, is deemed lazy or incumbent. Leading to immense pressure on students who feel the need to satisfy unnecessarily high expectations of them. The scene is quite different in terms of schools, where teachers are hired based on their capabilities of class room management and communication methods rather than the number of 75/75s they can assure from a class of 17 year olds. Communication is a big part of these formative years. If unguided during times of self doubt and stress, children could make bad decisions really quick. These bad decisions could stretch from smoking to suicide, where even the lower end of the spectrum is cancerous.

Here are some disadvantages a student will face if he/she picks the state board over the national curriculum.

i) Lack of physical activity; as most of these private colleges are very minimal in infrastructure,

ii) A change in teaching methods, where English is rarely the medium of instruction,

iii) Percentiles are way higher in terms of state boards* because, 97-98% scores happen every year. This percentile greatly affects your JEE rank,

iv) Segregated classrooms make social interactions very awkward,

*Expanding on the percentile issue, each state board holds it's only value of percentile when it comes to determining your rank at the end of the whole process. Let's say, in your state, the highest mark is 900/1000. Now every student is marked on a percentile vs. this score. Since states like AP & TS have a history of very high scores, even a difference of 10 marks could mean too big a gap to cover with respect to national percentiles of CBSE exams (where the highest is usually around the 94-95%). And since there are fewer number of students who score very high on their 12th boards, scoring around the 90% mark could ensure a good national rank, which is very vital to getting into national level institutions.

Schools give the opportunity to study a subject with the focus on learning rather than on preparing for exams as first priority. They keep comfortable hours allowing ample time for students to pursue additional courses for entrance exams of all natures, ranging from design to Engineering. This is one big plus since it gives the student that little bit of wriggling room and not cut down potential courses where he/she might find interest as time goes on. This is important as it helps children cope with failure, if in case they do encounter it. It is always good to have alternatives, no matter what the situation is.

So on whom does the onus lie? The students or the faculty? The parents or the system? Who needs to change? What needs to change so that we can finally have a common metric of comparison. The responsibility to uplift and criticize such methods of teaching must be looked into. No longer should a system exist which entertains widespread practical cheating, or pressurizing to the point of mental trauma. If we as a community keep normalizing such behavior and not address to the notion of perfect grades make perfect slaves, we will not improve the level of education in India.
"}]

Video Games, for all the mainstream acceptance they have the world over, still remain somewhat of a niche market in India, even in 2017. The community of gamers in India is close, most people who are in the upper echelons of the community know each other, with many more gamers joining each year. If you are an old-school gamer, you would remember the introduction of Steam to PC gaming and how much it was disliked, before it slowly turned into a boon for gamers over the years. Steam, however, was not without faults. it would only accept credit cards in a country where less than 1% of the population had them. The stage was set, there was a problem, and India's growing gaming community needed a solution.

Meet Bhanu Pratap from Bhubaneswar, the 23 year old founder of Reapershop.com, a website that sells PC games with great deals, and was one of the first people in India to made games on Valve Corporation's Steam platform be easily available in India.

"The journey started way back when I was in 12th. Back then I was trading on Steam," says Bhanu, referring to trading games between players or steam accounts, "games, items, it was a nice way of getting new games to play and also make some money back then" he laughs.

Bhanu eventually realised the potential in selling games to Indian gamers without access to credit cards, with the ease of steam making people prefer buying original games over pirating them. After a few years in trading, he finally established Reapershop.com, a website on which potential buyers can directly buy the games they want, using safe and secure payment gates. "As of today, we have anything between 20-30 games being sold every day," says Bhanu, "and that is frankly something that took a lot of hard-work to achieve."

Bhanu credits full stack developer Vikas Kapadiya with where he is today, "Honestly, if it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be where I am today. Vikas has been a great help, developing the website and ironing out the bugs."

Bhanu dropped out of engineering in his third year and pursued his dream of starting the website. On being asked what would be his advice to students who want to start their own ventures, he laughs and says,"I dropped out because I knew what I was going to do, I had something that I could depend on. Obviously education is important, but that being said, if you know you have an idea that can make you money, something you can depend on and be willing to chase that dream without flinching, then yes, one should start their own venture. It is always better to work for yourself, at your own convenience, than working for someone else" he concludes.

Bhanu Pratap is a pathbreaker, he has shown gamers in the country that access to good games at reasonable rates often translates into guaranteed sales. With Reapershop.com, he has cemented his place as a pioneer in the Indian Gaming Community, which keeps growing at a rapid pace.

This time of the year, all the 12 standard students are in the what's next phase. With the board exams almost coming to an end, it is the prime time to do a little research on the universities that you need to apply for graduation. Arts and Humanities offer many subjects like Literature, Political Science, Geography, Sociology, Languages, etc.

If you are someone who is interested in establishing a career in social work, politics, law, teaching or content writing then it is important that you choose your University carefully. There are several factors that you need to check on before you apply to the Universities. Here is what can help you shortlist the finest colleges for Humanities.

txt
rich_1489144098312

1. Affiliation

What is most important is the affiliation of the institute you are going to apply. Check for its University affiliation even if it is one of the renowned and esteemed institute in the country. There are many colleges in India who are into teaching humanities without proper recognition by the authorized board. 2. Alumni

Before you shortlist colleges to fill in the application, try to find contacts of the alumni of the college. This is the best source of information to judge the credibility of the institute. Be it regarding the faculty, flexibility, exposure or the placements, they guide you through the process and give you genuine and reliable information about the institute. 3. Rankings

Do not randomly judge the potential of the college through the ranking. Some surveys are not genuine, therefore look for how established a college is rather than following rankings by random websites or surveys. Even if you do, choose a ranking system you think is not biased, popular and credible.

4. Placements

Placements is one of the deciding factor but not a conclusive parameter to judge the potential of the college. Look for the companies, NGOs or institutes that are a part of the campus recruitment process. Mostly it is the name of the college that is going to matter when you go for post graduation later. The exposure that you gain in a university is important and not just the job.

Many top Universities like Shri ram college, Delhi or St. Xavier's, Mumbai have an a eligibility criteria that needs to be fulfilled, mostly the top colleges have high cut offs. March 8 is observed as International Women's Day and social media saw a lot of buzz about it, with cheesy posts wishing women a happy women's day and more but there's a lot of underlying sexism even in these messages. Many of the messages are subtle indications of the behavioural expectations and standards that are imposed on women. All this, made me think whether women's day is really a day to celebrate and be 'happy' about or whether the very existence of a "women's day" is questionable, as it shows shows the failure to give equal respect, status, stature and freedom to women - half the world's population.

There have been several instances throughout the ages that prove my above statement but more recently, a Delhi student, Gurmehar Kaur, was the subject of rape threats and more because she took one stance against an issue. What bothers me here is the fact that a 20 year old student was threatened with rape just because of her political views and if it were a male, then the sexual-assault would definitely had not been one of the threatening aspects. This incident clearly highlights how women are perceived in our society and how sexual assault is used as a threat, as a lesson-teacher and more.

And right on women's day, i.e. yesterday, members of a religious political outfit attacked couples in Kochi, in a freak incident that creepily reminded everyone of the 2009 Mangalore pub incident. While women were not beaten up yesterday (the way they were beaten up in 2009 in Mangalore), the very fact that they were threatened with violence by armed goons shows how we have failed as a species to give safety and security to half the population. The icing on sugar here is the presence of cops, who are clearly seen in the video showing the incident; but who don't do anything to protect the innocent youngsters (who are most likely students).

Raising a simple question here, when will we achieve equality in all aspects for both genders?
"}]
A Local Area Network on LAN for short was first proposed sometime around the year 1993. It was not termed as Wireless Hotspot until much later, but there was an understanding of how this tech could go wireless. They just called it Wireless LAN. As an engineering student myself, I can’t even begin listing how many times WLAN has come in handy for me. And I’m sure it has come to the rescue of almost all students in general. Don’t know what I’m talking about?

Ok let’s begin by understanding how a WLAN or a hotspot actually works because most of you might start using it less after the 31st. At the risk of sounding like your run off the mill computer science nerd, I’m going to talk about the infrastructure of these networks. Right off the bat, there are 3 main types of WLAN infrastructures,

1) Ad Hoc or P2P:

In this structure, a network has stations which communicate only peer to peer. In a Wi-Fi P2P group, the group owner operates as an access point and all other devices are clients. This usually works out when the devices are in close range of the transmitting network.

2) Bridge:

A wireless Ethernet bridge allows the connection of devices on a wired Ethernet network to a wireless network. The bridge acts as the connection point to the Wireless LAN.

3) Wireless Distribution System:

This system allows wireless interconnection between various source providers. Connections between clients is made by using MAC addresses instead of IP assignments. This requires all the base stations to be tuned into the same radio frequency or channel and share a password if equipped. This system is usually used in router to router configurations where each base point works to amplify or extend the signal input.

Still don’t see how hotspots help you as a student? A few examples maybe will help,

Notes are essential to any student life and realistically and not all students, let’s say, are eager to write during a lecture. One revolutionary method our generation has taken up to bypass this note taking tradition is by taking pictures or scanned pdfs from the poor souls who are attentive enough. Yes, the time of the Xerox copies is a thing of the past. The future is now old man. But there’s one tiny problem. The transfer of these files from person to person. Admittedly, we could still use services like a messenger to send or receive these images but, one way better alternative is to use applications on your mobile like Xender, ShareIt etc. which work on creating a local hotspot using your phones inbuilt tethering service to transfer files without ever using the internet. This mechanism allows for very high speeds which we all love.

Let’s be honest here, almost everyone of us has been guilty of asking that one friend with unlimited 4g data pack to just leave his WiFi-hotspot on for hours on end just so that we can have our Facebook feed popping all during the day. In the settings of your Android phone, you can actually set the no. of users that can connect to your tethered hotspot and also control the bandwidth. (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz)

In our addiction to have competitive gaming possible at all possible time and place, game developers have built in certain mechanics to satisfy our need to assert dominance, however stupid that dominance might seem. Some common games which use a local hotspot to give competitive player vs player experience are Mini Militia, Badlands, Crossy Road and few arcade games like Chess and Checkers. And who can deny major league WLAN gaming like Dota2 and CounterStrike events which include hundreds of gamers to be on the same platform to improve the competitive atmosphere on the whole.

Even the messaging apps have begun rolling out local texting, or offline chat as they like to call it, which pretty much uses the same concept of a local WLAN to allow transfer of everything from messages, pictures and movies right from your conversation screen. Although this might seem trivial, who wouldn’t take up an opportunity to reduce on data usage once the free internet dies off.
"}]
