How to choose a career?

 Finding a career that best suits you is the most difficult task before achieving your goal. It takes time and of course, your career will likely shift throughout your working life. You may end up changing your interests, roles, motivations, and industries. 


Research says the average person spends around one-third of their life working, so it's no surprise that many people want to find a career that will be a good fit for them. 


Choosing a career doesn't just mean getting a job. It means knowing about exploring as much as you can about yourself, your interests, your goals, and the context of the work you aim at. Here are Five methods listed below to help you narrow your options and choose your career.

Know yourself and the long-term goals 

To begin with, exploring yourself, knowing your strengths, and knowing what you enjoy doing and what you value can be helpful indicators of how you’d like to spend your working time. Make a note of some of the questions about your interests, values, and traits, and consider how you might answer them.


Question yourself about how you wanted to see your perfect life. Make a list of your long-term goals, both personal and professional to help you get a proper closure for your confusion. The list you put together can also help you approach a job search more specifically.  

Reflect on your motivations 

Turn your motivations for working once you put together your interests and goals. Most careers won’t feature everything you’d like, so it’s important to understand your priorities. Your priorities may be something like Career growth, salary, Flexibility, work-life balance, etc. Organize them accordingly and understand your priorities.  

Take career assessments and self-assessment tests 

Many tests help you evaluate your skills, interests, everything about your personality and even what career might be a good fit for you. You can use such a test to continue learning more about yourself and your underlying motivations.  

Explore Industries and Sectors 

Learning more about each sector, its respective goals, and different industries may help you determine where you’d be a strong fit. 

Think about which goals sound most interesting to you. Know which sector suits you well such as private, public, or non-profit. Know their benefits and how they help you in your professional growth. Search for different Industries and see if they are worth invest.  

Look for Professional Resources 

Once you got a bigger picture about yourself and your goals, start to research various career possibilities and career coaches who could guide you and make it easier. There are many such organizations that could help you to level up your skills and seize the potential opportunities.

 Career coaches are an additional expense, so make sure to research their credentials, experience, and background to make sure they will be a good fit for your needs.
