Today, July 20, 2017 India gets their 14th President which is five days prior to the incumbent President's term expires. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) announced its contenders for the 14th Presidential election on June 19, 2017. The election was held on 17th of the month and the counting of votes ends on Thursday. One of the strong contenders presented by Amit Shah is Ram Nath Kovind. Many of us don't know much about the first candidate for the President.
Here are 10 quick facts about likely to be our future President.
1. Born in Kanpur Dehat in Uttar Pradesh on October 1, 1945, has a Bachelor degree in Commerce and Law from Kanpur University, chaired the Governor's seat of Bihar in 2015 on August 8.
2. Coming from a Koli community of Scheduled Caste background, he has been former Dalit President and quite long path speaking for the dalits and downtrodden section of socitey.
3. Ram Nath Kovind is an advocate by profession and practices in Delhi. From 1977, he was Central Government Advocate in Delhi High Court for next two years. Later, from 1980 to 1993 he was Central Government Standing Counsel in the Supreme Court. He practiced in Delhi High Court and Supreme Court for 16 years.
4. This BJP politician also chaired Rajya Sabha committee as Member of Parliament in April, 1994 and served for two consecutive terms which is 6 years each till March 2006.
5. Kovind also served as the National Spoke-Person for Bhartiya Janta Party
6. After his Bachelors degree of Law, Ram Nath came to Delhi and applied for Civil Services Examination but failed to clear twice. Finally, in the third attempt Kovind nailed it, but did not join as he was elected for allied services rather than IAS.
7. Kovind was also the board member at Dr. B.R Ambedkar University in Lucknow and Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Kolkata.
8. He represented India in the United Nations and addressed the General Assembly of United Nations in October, 2002.
9. Beliefs are that Ram Nath Kovind victory would get the BJP Dalits votes.
10. If Kovind is likely to be our President then he is the second Dalit to take up the President-ship after KR Narayana.
