Inspiration

Gauri Sawant

With her saree draped around her body and long tied hair she fights against the stigmas of the world alone with her adopted daughter who has the privilege of going to school.
Mothers all around the globe are given exceptional respect that they deserve for the thorns they walk on in order to protect and take care of their loved ones.

But, some mothers remain unacceptable to the society because of their inadmissible lifestyle.
This is the story about that mother, who was rejected as a girl but, ended up being a mother. That she didn't hold any sort of rights and didn't exist in the eyes of the law. Yet, she took in a girl child of a deceased HIV positive woman, so that she wouldn't be sold to the traffickers.

Gauri Sawant, born as Ganesh decided not to change to match her sex, but to change to match her Identity.
Gauri didn't feel any different when she was young as she considered herself as normal as the next human. But, when society tried to fit her in the rigid box of gender, she realised that she was different than other people.

After running away from home at the age of 15 as her family was unable to accept her, she was introduced to Humsafar Trust where she earned 15,000 a month especially for a communication skills as it held authority, a hint of wit and a perfect amount of humour.

She ended up getting involved in a lot of things like helping people to come into terms with their feelings, spreading awareness among people regarding HIV, and insisting sex workers to get themselves a proper check.
One of them was Gayathri's mother, who died due to HIV. Gayathri was five when, there was a talk about her being sold off for sex work in Sonagachi. With the intention of fulfilling the need to protect a young flower, she became a MOTHER.

As for her activism, Gayatri, besides working with 1,000 to 2,000 people for sensitisation about their legal rights and STDs, is actively involved in the running of a shelter for young trans individuals who are turned away by family. She also has a pet cause – saving the turtles and nurturing the street dogs.

Maybe, sometimes the role and the responsibility that an individual holds, shapes his personality and nature. Gauri Sawant, a lovely transgender mom and an hard working activist is now set to make her life worthy and protect. others.
