5 Easy Recipes for the Broke College Student

We know you're tired of having Maggi every other morning. We know fast food will burn a hole in your already shallow pockets. So we decided to help you out - by teaching you how to cook! Don't worry, it isn't as hard as it sounds. You'll save money this way and have some fun too. Just don't burn the house down.

1. Tawa Garlic Bread

Now you can make delicious garlic bread at home – without an oven! We know you’re bored of having the same old jam sandwiches. Try this out!

Take 2 tablespoons of softened butter in a bowl; add 4 cloves of minced garlic, salt, pepper and chilli powder and mix well. Heat a pan over a medium-high flame. Spread the garlic butter mixture on both sides of two slices of bread and toast them until crisp. Put a cheese slice between two slices of bread and cook until cheese melts. Serve immediately. Here's a video to help you out:

2. Healthy Loaded Breakfast Omelette

Here's an omelette loaded with healthy veggies and flavour, and is a complete meal in itself. This will surely keep you feeling full for a long time!

Take one large capsicum, tomato and onion. Chop them into cubes and set aside. Finely chop four cloves of garlic and set aside. Take about a cup of fresh spinach and wash thoroughly. Crack three eggs into a large bowl and season with salt, pepper and chili powder to taste.

Heat up 4-5 tablespoons of oil in a flat-based saucepan over a medium flame. Add in the onions and capsicum and cook gently until onions are soft and translucent. Add in the garlic and tomatoes and cook until they lose their raw flavour. Season with salt and pepper(garam masala if desired). Add in the spinach and cook for 1-2 minutes. Add in the beaten eggs and mix until the eggs thoroughly coat the bottom of the pan. Cover the pan with a lid and cook on low flame for 5-6 minutes. Remove the lid and flip the omelette(this is the tricky part) and cook for another 2-3 minutes.

Remove from the flame and serve hot with a few slices of toasted bread and some fruit juice and you're set.

3. Paneer Bhurji

This one is for when you have friends over or you're just really really hungry. Don't get intimidated, it's pretty simple to make.

Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a saucepan. Add two chopped onions and saute until they become translucent. Add in 2 tablespoons of ginger-garlic paste and finely chopped green chillis. Saute until onions turn golden. Add 3 pureed or crushed tomatoes and cook until oil starts to leave the sides of the pan. Add one teaspoon each of turmeric, chilli powder and garam masala. Add salt to taste. Add 200 grams grated paneer and mix until completely incorporated with the onions. Remove from heat and garnish with chopped coriander.

Serve hot with pulkas or rotis.

4. Classic Pancakes

If you're feeling continental this morning, here's something that'll satisfy your sweet tooth.

In a large bowl, mix 1 cup flour, 2 tablespoons sugar, 2 teaspoons baking powder and 1 teaspoon salt. Make a well in the center, and pour in 1 cup of milk, 1 beaten egg and 2 tablespoons vegetable oil. Mix until smooth. Heat a lightly oiled frying pan over medium high heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 1/4 cup for each pancake. Brown on both sides and serve hot with honey or jam.

5. Egg Fried Rice

Another egg-based dish, but Chinese this time. This recipe will be just as good as your local fast food center's - it's Sanjeev Kapoor's, after all.

Finely chop 3 spring onion bulbs with greens. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a non-stick pan. Crack 2 eggs into the pan along with salt, pepper powder and 1 tablespoon chopped spring onion greens. Scramble and cook till fully done. Remove from heat and set aside. Heat remaining oil in another non-stick pan. Add chopped spring onion bulbs and saute till golden. Add 2 cups cooked rice and toss to mix. Add 1 tablespoon soy sauce, salt and pepper powder and mix thoroughly. Add scrambled eggs and remaining spring onion greens and toss to mix on high heat. Serve hot garnished with some chopped spring onion greens.
